  • Stainless Brake Lines

I'm looking to replace all brake lines with braided stainless. I happened to be strolling the plumbing aisle at Ukranian Tire and spotted stainless lines for sinks and faucets. The question is whether these things have a pressure rating. I was considering snipping off the plumbing fittings and having banjo fittings installed. The price was certainly better and they come in a variety of lengths.
Same thought for my oil cooler lines.

    Any opinions?
    Thanks!

      No

+1 on the big "NO". Not just the pressure, but not rated for the type of fluid used.

Actually Ukranian Tire is just a spoof on Canadian Tire, which is a long established automotive, hardware, camping, gardening, etc., etc., chain. So I won't be using plumbing fittings on my SG. It was just a thought - thanks for the feedback.

So this raises a question -- where's the best place to buy stainless steel brake lines online?

The Mike's XS lines are for an XS650 and therefore, inappropriate for an XS1100. I can also tell you from my own experience, do not buy from Bremzen. Others have had positive experiences and can point you the way.

A seller on eBay by the name of 'coastguard' is a favorite of some here, and price-wise will be the guy to beat. A few listers have had issues with his lines though, so YMMV.

Russell and Goodridge both sell braided lines, although not a XS-specific 'kit'. But you can buy the various fittings and hoses and 'assemble' your own, and have a few more choices in fit/finish. More $$ though...

I've personally used the Goodridge lines on a couple of bikes and been pleased.

The only issue I had with the ones from coastguard was that the bajos had no bend to them so they were a bit tight getting on but doable.

I recently found out that galfer actually has at least front lines for our bikes. They have both two line and three line kits for the front. They are a bit pricey, but they also come in multiple colors that let you match them to the color scheme of your bike. I've found the best price them on http://www.pashnit.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=55 where you can buy them online. Galfer will also do custom lines as well if you give them the measurements, but since they have standard sets for our bikes it seems like that might be a way to go.

Those might work, but the length needs to be very close and the ends need to be crimped on with the right orientation. If either or both are wrong, you'll have issues with them rubbing and/or being too short/long....
