Flange
Are you useing "stock"flanges? What kind of hex nuts, stock or aftermarket? If the down pipes are "correct" for the year and model of the bike and the rest is stock, it should tighten down. There are different depth of pipes on diferent years/models of stock pipes. Please give a discription of all parts and years / models you are usingOriginally posted by guycom View PostHi I am working on a 78 xs1100 and have removed a header and am trying to fit stock down pipes...new gaskets and what i believe ar stock studs..the hex drive nuts dont appear to run down far enough to tighten the pipe to the head...am I missing washers? Exhaust gaskets
There are compressible gaskets that fit down inside where the header pipe goes, if missing it will be loose.
They wont normally pop out, but if pipes were off for awhile they might be out.
They look like thin washers wrapped around some thin gasket material. Availavle at dealer.
Here is an auction example:

There's two lengths of head pipe flanges; the 'early' type at 1 1/16", and the 'late' type at 13/16". All the '78 bikes used the longer flange, so if fitting later pipes, the threaded studs can be too long. You can put a 1/4" spacer under the nut to make up the difference (or change the studs). There should also be a lockwasher.
Also check to make sure all the flanges are the same; I've run into sets that had short outers/long inners. From what I've seen, all the Specials used the shorter flanges, but I've seen both on standard exhausts....Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Great info and Thanx
I have a title for the bike as 1978 but not sure if the engine is original and the header pipes were purchased with some other parts on craigslist. I'm sure the 1/4" spacer and lock nut will work . I have two studs that I have replaced and am using the hex drive nuts that were on the original header. I also just ordered a new set of gaskets they were there but beat up. Thanks Again....GuyGuycom

Just a quick note, Are all the studs all the way in? In other words, are there a few studs that stick out a little futher than the others? That would mean that the studs aren't all the way in.
I've hears that some have doubled up on the exhaust gaskets too.
You can check you 'VIN' # on the block and it'll tell you what year your bike is.
