  • Good day today...

Started this morning and got a '78 engine in my '80.. And it sounds good! Used the '80 carbs and timing advance, left the '78 mechanical advance intact. Need to sync and hit the highway..

Thanks Tom - It does feel good... I still have more to do before I start riding it - Like figure out why I get hot oil all over my legs! I still need to fit the Vetter hard bags and finish it out. I've got some lowers for the fairing... maybe be riding through the winter!

I've read your threads so have sort of been following the death and resurrection of this bike, and I can't tell you how cool it is to see it back up and running. How much trouble was the actual swap itself?

Hey guys - Swapping the engine was easier than expected. We wrapped a chain around it and slung it from an engine hoist. Only the oil filter was removed for clearance. Once it was close, a couple of pry bars, shove in the mounts, hook up the drive shaft and have a smoke.
The book says remove the head, jugs, clutch and starter... then it's light enough for two guys to lift it in or out. That sounds like way too much work!

I changed mine with everything still on it, just a floor jack and a couple of two by fours. Took some juggling and I didn't even have the filter off.

                Engine weight

I was wondering what a complete engine weighs.. I'm guessing about 350 lbs? I know my son and I could lift it, but not high enough to get it on the workbench... It sure made my belly button pucker... If the bike is 650lbs wet then about half would be engine weight maybe..
Nick - Don't give up! Keep working on it - I've got '78 spare parts if you need anything to get it running... PM me...

I believe it's 200 and something IIRC. I know my daughter and I were able to lift mine without too much trouble. I forget what the shipping weight was on mine when I bought it, but I know it was less than 300, but it shipped without the clutch.
