From the sound of things, I would also agree that life for you kind of sucks right now. The engine could be repaired, but there is a number fo decent engines to be had for less than the cost of the gasket kit.
Like Barnfresh, I know a fellow XSive in Indianapolis area that had a very similar thing happen. He heard that ticking sound. But he continued riding his for about 30 miles or so. He even pulled over, stopped the engine, the noise went away and then came back as he continued riding. Eventually he got home and it had oil running out the exhaust pipe. Sure enough, dropped the valve head off the exhaust valve of #3 hole. The chamber of the head and the piston got beat to bloody heck and back by it before it got shoved out the exhuast port and was rattling around in the pipe. And yes, the piston had a nice size hole in it as well.
Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

The #3 cylender must be the unlucky one. I had the same thing happen to my 78 this pasted spring.
A hole was punched into the case of my engine when the valve got pined between the crank and the case. Glad to hear that you were able to get pulled over befor it locked up.(I rode for a half mile after the oil came spewing out before pulling over)
Like everyone is saying find an engine and swap it out. I have found several engines but just haven't had the money when they come up.

I didn't lose any valves. Mine was cause by a too lean condition running too hard on only 2 cylinders at WOT.
my unlucky number was #4.
There was so much blow-by, it blew out one of the cam plugs and oil gushed everywhere.

Once you get over the stages of grief, buy a parts bike. If you are worried about the cost, pay a visit to a dealer and price new bikes - the sticker shock will make it a lot easier to drop $500 on a decent donor XS. I think owning, riding and maintaining a bike of this quality and performance for 2K - 3K $ is an incredible bargain.. about 10% of a 2012 model. I found some on CL and EBAY, but the best source is XS11.com from people who know.
I was just over at Andreas' and if you call him quick he can probably get a new motor enroute before he leaves for Phoenix tomorrow. He has a couple of complete motors on the shelf. Plug & play!

Sorry, been away from the bike for a bit. It is finally leaking from somewhere, and I'll pull her apart tonight. Been sick and busy, so haven't had a chance to play with it. But, not having a bike to ride is killing me. I love my cager, but it definitely doesn't add the same level of calm and joy that the xs did
