  • now im really confused?

Ok as said befor I'm new to everything new rider new owner ect ect but what in the world would cause oil in my airbox? Any ideas?

  • #2
The air box has a crankcase vent, blow by from the rings will leave a small amount of oil which is normal. A large amount could be from an overfilled crankcase, check your oil level in the sight glass with the bike on the centerstand, not the side stand. It should be in the middle between the two lines.

Ok the oil was a little full thank you I siphoned some out is there a chance of any damage from that?

Not unless it is contaminated with gasoline from the carbs flooding at one point. If the oil is thin and smells like gas, change it and the filter.

If it's thin and smells like gas, if your lucky you might be OK, but it's also possible that the bearings are damaged. One of the more common reasons for engine failure is oil thinned by gas. It's one of the reasons that you need to keep a close eye on the oil level cause if it goes up that means BIG trouble.

              Oil channge

The bike is "new to you" so, I would change the oil just to be sure, then get a good level referance ( I like to hold the bike at exact dead center by the handlebars, center stand up and side stand off the ground, that way you know it isen't leaning at all Then check before you go riding each time, if the oil level goes up at all, start checking as to how / why gas is getting in the crankcase and fix before you ride to save the main and rod bearings

If the oil level goes up it means your carbs are overflowing into the cylinders. If so you need to pull them and clean them and fix the problem with them that is causing the leak. But change the oil and filter first, cause it could be a problem that's not happening any more.

As for where you can get the air filter, they are a bit hard to find, make sure you really need one first. For the oil filter, you can get them at the Yamaha dealer, or Napa auto parts, or CycleGear. Those are the one that I KNOW carry them, there may be others.

                      Advanced Auto

I get mine at Advanced Auto, but most chains can get them in, airfilter can be hard to find at some, Ebay has them most of the time. This oil filter (fram CH6002) fits most XS's (see attached chart) and is $4.99 with both "O" rings at Advanced Auto)

The last time I bought a couple, they were about $6 each. Most places will have to order them, but it is still available. You can also get the filter anyplace that sells Wix filters (which is who makes the NAPA ones), that number is 24933.

Fram also make one, but their's don't come with new o-rings and are more than a bit cheesy....

Last couple of fram's I got came with both o-rings, but around here at least all the stores claim the fram has discontinued that filter. However all the others AFAIK are still in production since several other fairly popular bikes use the same filter.

Around here (Florida) I have to order them at the store if I want to pick up at the store and avoid S/H on Advanced Auto's web site. It takes one or two days to get it, so no big deal for me, I am cheap I like the two new "O" rings and the $4.99 price, like I said, I am cheap
