  • Wiring question

Does anyone know where to get the plastic sleeving that the harnesses use?
I've got a splice repair on my handle bar switch and the PO cut the sleeving to get to the broken wire, repaired it (badly) and taped the thing back up.
Also, The pick up coil wiring harness sleeving was so badly 'cooked' that it was so brittle it cracked and came apart in many places. I put heat shrink along the entire length. (from the ingnition cover up to the plug behind the fuse box)
I'm afraid that the heat shrink will get brittle and hard fast from all the engine heat.
I'm looking for that soft vinyl stuff that the wires go in.
    Any ideas?

I've looked in vain for that too, with no luck. You can find similar products, but most don't work all that well. Generally, I'll use heat shrink too, but I won't shrink it. McMaster-Carr is a good source for the various sizes/types...

Is this kinda what your looking for? I work at Oreilly here in Utah. They have a few different sizes. Most of them are kinda big but we can order most anything. Since we have a big warehouse here in town I get 4 deliveries a day. So most stuff I can get in a few hours at least.

Thanks Azroth, but that's the ribbed wire loom stuff. Not exactly what I'm looking for.

Thanks Steve, McMaster has something that might work.

Maybe I'll try the local hardware store and see what's out there.

I forgot about these guys: http://riwire.com/

Click on 'supplies', then click on 'metal and non-metal conduit'. Still not quite the same as the factory stuff, but pretty close....

I don't know if you would want to go this route or not but this stuff is amazing.

            http://www.rescuetape.com/

It has amazing properties as heat resistence, high voltage insulation, pressure containment (like for a busted radiator hose) etc. It doesn't stick to the item being taped, you pull and stretch it as you apply it and make 2 passes over the area. It fuses to itself and cannot unwrap. you have to cut it length wise to remove it. Another cheaper version is "Tommy Tape". I think in most instances it would work as well. This is someting to put in every tool kit you have for emergencies. I have used it for years to tape up and waterproof all electrical and RF connectors on the antennas I use in Ham radio. TRust me, this stuff works!!

I am in no way affiliated with this product, just a happy customer.

I use that stuff too, I used it on the carb mounting boots to cover up the surface cracks. Home Depot carries it as well under a different name.

Thanks Steve. That's about as close as I've seen so far.
As soon as I find something that is just about as close to OEM, I'll post it for all those who need to replace theirs.
