I have the small guards that cover the lower case. Timing and generator but I would rather have the large hoop that protects the whole motor. Anyone have a source?

You're not going to find new (unless you luck into a NOS unit somewhere), but they do turn up on eBay occasionally. Here's one:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/YAMAHA-78-XS...sories&vxp=mtr
... but it's got some rash on the left side. Could be fixed/replated ($$$), or wait and see if something better turns up.

      Hi Mack,
have you considered a generic full loop guard?
The ones that attach to the frame with U-bolts?
Betcha could find one at a local swapmeet for not too much money.

Is that going to actually bolt on an XS though? It is off a kz11.

            Universal

It looked like an aftermarket "universal" crash bar, I am "guessing" it would fit most any large jap bike from that time frame Its a "U" bolt design that should allow for clamping on to the frame where ever they meet

Check the for sale section, I believe that a member has the large hoop style for sale. I don't think he's sold them yet either. He's selling a bunch of parts cause he's chopping the bike and the engine guard is one of the parts he is getting rid of.
