  • Gas Cap Seal Replacement Update

This is a bad news/good news update...

DGXSER posted an inexpensive fix for this here: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...thermostat+gas The OEM seal is NLA, and the Mikes gasket which was the alternative choice was being reported as not lasting too long.
So this looked like a decent alternative, easily found/installed. I used one of these on my SG built to replace the hardened/cracked original and it seemed to work.

Well, it didn't work very long. I got a phone call from the new owner of the SG (unrelated to the problem) and he mentioned in passing that the T-stat/gas cap gasket started leaking. But the good news is he found that the '80 XS650 gasket will fit and it's still available new from Yamaha for under $10. He had to order it, and it's not an exact fit (he said it needed to be stretched a bit to get it on), but once on it cured the leaking. Just a heads-up...

I'll note that I've found that you can still get some small parts new from Yamaha (shifter rubber, some seals, among other stuff) and most prices have been reasonable, so rather than take a chance on uneven-quality aftermarket parts I've been trying the dealer first.

Yea, I'm going to have to redo my whole gas cap and all... it just looks crappy and doesnt close all the way. Going to see if I can find a Special tank to put on there.

Thanks Steve, I need to do that gasket thing also. I looked up the 650SG OEM parts and it wasen't very clear, I ordered "a" gasket, #2G2-24522-00-00? I am hoping it is the right one $1.80 seemed too cheap for the right part. Thanks for the install thread also, last time I did a gasket R&I to clean the vent I did it from the bottom of the cap that was fun You also got me going back to work on my tank and sidecovers After looking at your bike pic's, well I got to R&I the tank for the P-cock seals, so why not sand and polish The Camaro pick was a work in progress just to show the paint, I did replace the exaust with OEM style and other stuff before it was shown. Here is a under hood pic, gold frame, red controll arms ect:

The part number I'm coming up with is 2MO024641-00-00, which supposedly fits '76-84 650s. Yamaha's parts site lists it at $22, so now I'm wondering just what the guy bought. He couldn't remember specifically what he asked for and didn't have the part number...

Interesting, I still have one on mine that has given em no problems yet. Wonder what caused it to leak?

Don, he didn't say. When I fitted it it seemed to be ok, but I did notice that it sealed on the very outer part of the filler neck. I didn't ride the bike all that much before I sold it, so I didn't give it much of a long-term test.

And after thinking about it, he may not have got a 'real' Yamaha part; I know one of the parts guys at that particular dealer is into 650s, so he may have ordered/sold the guy a Mikes gasket with a few dollar mark-up...

I just realized (and we all should have also) if the MikeXS part fits, then the Yamaha part that's still available should fit also, since the MikesXS part is just a reproduction part. I may have to order one from my Yammy dealer, cause I know mine is a bit dry and I'm not happy with how it looks, but I've gotta wait for the money to get better first.

What bike are you guys messing with? Special or standard. 2M0-24641-00-00 is the gasket for the Special. The list price is about $22. I found it in the fiche for the XS1100SH. I may buy one. Since the first one has lasted over thirty years, a new one will last until I'm eighty something years old!

In my particular case, it was a Special; but the same issue may occur on the standards....

On the standard, I use a thick Oring. It is tight on the unit and has to be rolled on, but it does work well. Gas resistant, yada yada.
