    Am I really seeing a rotor and stator like on my XJ??

    I mean, of course the rotor has a commutator instead of the copper rings, but who knows, maybe there are copper rings hiding under the other side of the rotor

    I'm now in search of what car this is from so I can make a visit to the junk yard....

    Don't know for sure, that looks an awful lot like the alternator in my Camaro. I don't think that would fit into the cover on the XJ though. And the rotor I don't think can be put onto the end of the crankshaft on the XJ engine either. Also it I believe would require more RPM's that it would get, so you would need to run a pulley system like TC did for his mod, and you would do better to get a mini one wire alternator like he did to do that.

      Looks to be a Delco-Remy off a GM vehicle.

        Additional Pictures?

        Do you have any other pictures of the alternator, for example a view of the back of the unit or one prior to it being taken apart. If you do it would make it a lot easier to figure out the part number and in turn the application.

          I'm just realizing my ignorance
          Most car alternators have 3-phase windings that look very similar.

          Still, if there is a 3-phase stator that fits, I don't see why it wouldn't work at lower RPM with reduced output.
          I need to go spend the day at Pick-n-Pull with some measurements and see what I can find...

            If you're looking for something automotive that will fit in place of the XJ alternator, keep in mind that the machining needed may cost more than the bike is worth, assuming you overcome all the engineering differences...

            TC has the only practical alternator swap I've seen...

              I know I have options for replacing my alternator.. It's neat to see what TC did with his mod, but was hoping to not modify the look of the bike so much. I can always get the stator on ebay.

              Has anyone on here ever tried to re-wind one of these at home? 300+ windings doesn't exactly sound fun, but that's why we have winter up north right?

                I did finally figure out what alternator that is. It's from a 1988 Ford Bronco.
                I grabbed the 42 amp version to check it out and the stator is too small to fit over the existing rotor, but it does fit under the cover at least. I haven't messed with it much.

                Is there any concern with a smaller rotor on the end of the crank?

                Does anyone know (or TC?) know what alternator TC used in his project? I searched through the pages and couldn't find what was used...

                  The rotor also acts as a flywheel, so running something smaller will change the engine's balance. Whether or not it would be a bad thing is hard to say.

                  The alternator TC used is not an OEM unit, but is an aftermarket 'mini-alternator' designed for custom installs on rods and race cars. It's available from several sources and is made by Denso, so a search will turn one up I'm sure...
