Dang...I picked up a screw in an almost new Elite II years ago and did the goopy string patch. It lasted until the tread was gone. I didn't know it was so dangerous.
I had a Jeep Cherokee that had a patch in each tire with one tire having two patches when there was lots of home construction on the way to work. Roofing nails and sheetrock screws, plus a bracket from a kids toy have all glinted their shiny grins in my tires. Once it was a piece of angle iron that I'd bet someone dumped with the purpose of screwing up someone's tires, it was so well cut: two knife points, one of which had to point up."Time is the greatest teacher; unfortunately, it kills all of its students."

Just a side point, my last two "holes" have been from all things rocks. Little tiny triangle shaped rocks with sharp points. I check my tires regularly now, cause those things actually take some time to push their way through into the tire to cause a leak. In both cases the tires were on their last couple thousand miles of life and I plugged them and rode on them till I put new rubber on them (not on any trips, just around town riding). Again, not string plugs, but mushroom head plugs, but yes, the stop and go plugs which are indeed temp plugs. That said, I'd not attempt going more than 10-15 miles from home or more than about 45 MPH on them like that either, I'd get them PROPERLY patched, but I do believe they can be properly done, but NOT while still on the rim, they MUST be unmounted to be repaired.Cy
