Just remove and flip your
OEM tank around placed where seat was, hook up fuel lines and sync/set idle mix.81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

I am guessing that it was a float hung up on a gasket or something like that causing it to flood and then not now. I have never used a separate tank, always done just what Moto described.
The only other thing that would make sens is if you hung the fuel tank way up high and had lots of fuel in it, it might possibly have had more pressure against the float valve than the floats can create. But I doubt that really.
Just glad you got it running good again. I know what a frustration it can be to get the carbs working right, and how nic eit is when they finally cooperate!!!Life is what happens while your planning everything else!
When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.
