  • Factory Manuals....

Ok, I'm curious.... how many 'kinds' of factory manuals are out there? I'm not talking about aftermarket manuals like the Clymer, but the official, published-by-Yamaha manuals. This was brought up by this thread: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=34469.

I've seen 'complete' factory manuals for the '78E models only, and the '78-80 bikes (with all the changes after '78 through '80 included as 'supplemental' info in the back of the book), but I've never seen a 'complete' factory manual for say, just the '78-79 bikes, or a all-inclusive version covering all the '78 through '81 bikes (the one C'bug has listed on his site is actually just the '78E only version). I see the various model 'supplements' offered on eBay, but that's it.

Anybody got a version other than what's listed above? I should note that I'm excluding the non-US versions, as there's enough differences between the bikes that a manual for those would be of limited usefulness to a US owner....

You can get a list of XS1100 Yamaha manuals that I've got cover pics for from the XS Part Numbers site - select Model = "Any XS1100", Where on the Bike = "Yamaha Accessories", aand type "Manual" into the box called "Part Name Contains".

The general rule is there is a single XS1100 Service Manual then Supplementary Manuals for each model (even the E!). Note that these Supplementary Manuals are cumulative over the years. e.g. The Supplementary Service Manual for the SH says that you must use the manual together with the following manuals :

            XS1100 E Service Manual
            XS1100 F Supplementary Service Manual
            XS1100 SF Supplementary Service Manual
            XS1100 G/SG Supplementary Service Manual
            Brian
            XS1100 LG "Mr T", SG "ICBM" & FJ1200
Check out the XS Part Number Finder

Be not stingy in what costs nothing as courtesy, counsel and countenance.

So you're saying this manual doesn't contain the supplements for the F, SF, G, and SG?

I've got two manuals; my original, bought-with-the-bike E manual seen here...

              [IMG][/IMG]

Contains only E info, and has two part numbers; the LIT-11616-00-81 number, as well as a 'regular' part number, 2H7-28197-10. This is the second printing (Jan 78).

And here's the newer version that covers the 78-80 bikes....

              [IMG][/IMG]

This covers the E as the 'basic' model (with that part of the manual being virtually identical to my 78-only manual), then has separate supplements covering the F, SF, G, and SG models in the back. The number is LIT-11616-XS-12. There's a reference to a '78-79 manual on the inside flyleaf page, LIT-11616-XS-11 (apparently the version Rasputin has) that only covers those bikes. I've personally never seen one of those...

These two are the 'complete' manuals that seem to turn up the most on the used market here in the US. Interestingly enough, neither of these are listed on the UK site, so feel free to use these pics to update...

                  Now that's interesting....

That appears to be the same manual as my newer one (with just a different cover) as it has the same part number. The interesting part is the fact that Yamaha didn't include the '81 model bikes...

This had to have been printed sometime after '94; that's when Yamaha made the switch to the 'Star' name for their street bikes sold in the US. So I wonder why at this late date they failed to include the '81 bikes when reprinting the manual? Are the '81 bikes considered an orphan, even by Yamaha?

                  Hmmm....

After exploring the 'Star' motorcycle site, I found that Yamaha still offers factory service manuals... for $93!!! And it's 'print on demand', whatever than means...

I think you'll find that if you look up the E, F, SF, G, SG, and LG manuals, you'll find the same part number for all; only the '81 manuals seem to different....
