  • Big Bore: Me too

Hey Guys, I've been gone awhile but I've set the wheels in motion to rebuild my 80sg. I'll be taking her in for surgery in a couple weeks. I've decided against port & polish due to practical performance losses, but the piston kit will be in and 2nd gear, hopefully, will be beefed up. I'm looking for a little more info on fixing the gear with the engine in. That would save time and money. Ken, I know you've got a page on this, and I'll be looking for it. But all the info I can get for the wrenchers will be helpful.

Hey dragxs11 on an xs11 a port job works really well with a big-bore kit. Of course you don't want a full-on race spec port job which will stuff up the low down torque, but a streetbike spec flowjob where the inlets and outlets have the restrictions around the valve stems ground away and reshaped and the ports generally cleaned up and evenly matched. It'll improve power over your whole rev range. It'll even improve your gas milage.

You definitely don't want the inlets polished as they need a semi-rough surface to help atomize the the fuel mix. Some people get the outlets polished, but I can't see the point as they still eventually get a carbon coating anyway. You may need to beef up the clutch to handle the extra grunt though.

It's not that easier, or quicker, but it can be more expencive if you f*ck it up. It aint a big deal removing/reinstalling the engine... just get 2 guys to help you. When reinstalling. You can pull it out yourself, if you aint on the wee side.
I had a friend over to help me pull it out.

                strom

Ive done it both ways and it takes 2hrs to take the engine out and 2 hrs to put it back how would it not be eazier saving 4 hrs labour to do the same job. Pluswe ruined parts ie: the rubber boot on the drive shaft and scatched up his frame. Ill do it my way thank you. Merry christmas Strom. ...........MITCH

Thanks guys, I've had the engine out myself before. I actually took it out on my own. Your right Strom, that it's not that hard. They want to take the engine out cause thats the way they know to do it. I guess I should probably just let them do it the way they know. I'll probably only confuse them. Merry Christmas.

                    2nd gear fix

                    Hey there Matt,

I guess I really need to get to work on that tech tip!!! If you are a member(If not, just join) of the Yahoo groups, go to the AllXS11's site, and check out the files section, Tips and Tricks section, then you'll see the folder for 2nd and 1st gear fix, there are quite a number of pictures, and a sorta step by step approach to pulling the gear shaft and such from the bottom without splitting the cases, along with diagrams for doing the grinding on the dogs and slots. But you mentioned you ordered the piston kit and 2nd gear, but replacing 2nd gear alone may not be enough, check out the diagrams and then you'll be able to better understand what's going wrong, and you may want to take a good look at your 1st/4th gear combo while you've got it apart!! Good luck, and have fun!!

The theory behind polishing exhaust ports is that the engine will run slightly cooler if the exhaust can exit faster and a polished port has less surface area. For a street bike it's not going to make enough difference to be worth the effort.

Hey TopCat, Thanks for the tip. I'll look at the tech tips or whatever you said after the Holidays. 2nd gear only slipped twice when I was doing a drag run on a back street. I think I can keep that gear, but I'm gonna need it to engage better with the extra HP. If I got it to slip with the stock engine, I know I'll take it right out with 100 more cc's. Happy New Year everyone.
