    Cam timing

    Saw this from Barnfresh http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?s...type=3&theater and it made me worry about my recent cam timing adjustment. Just to verify; I'm supposed to have the little dots on the cam bosses lined up with the little arrows on the bearing caps, right?

    With the timing pointer lined up with the "T" on the timing plate, both arrows on the cam caps should line up with the dots on the cams, correct.

      You may have to rotate another 180 deg to check those marks.
      Seeing as how our XS11s work with paired cylinders, TDC for #1 is also TDC for #4.

      In other words, with the timing pointer at "T" if you don't see the morks, then rotate another 180 deg and they should be right there.

      and ps. Ignore the wrench in the pic from phil. That's if you're rotating the cams. For a timing CHECK, rotate with the square nut under the timing cover.
      Oh and make sure you rotate in the proper direction.

            I'm no engine expert but; I would question if the hole in the piston was from the bike or cylinder running lean. I think it can lean can damage valves as well.

              Rick, I didn't think about the valves possibly being damaged.
              I was so focused on my holed piston. When I had the head off, I cleaned up all the carbon deposits in the combustion area, but I didn't mess with the valves at all. (I didn't have one of those fancy valve compression/removal tools) I guess it never occurred to me. My compression numbers were all good after reassembly, so maybe my valves are okay afterall.

                If compression is good then valves should be okay.
                Holed piston check jetting cylinder may have gotten too hot.
                Pull the plugs and read them white lean black rich.
