Ok, I have removed, cleaned, clesned, cleaned, cleaned, adjusted, checked for broke idle screws, replaced ALL, needle valves seats and screens and needles, checked ALL floats for leaks and clearence from gaskets, set float hight with a micrometer, checked main jet rod hight, checked ALL 4 diaphragm's for leaks, replaced, checked ALL lines and T's for leaks, cleaned adj choke linkage, check ALL hose routing, re-checked ALL hose routing, checked again, checked ALL intake manifolds for leaks and seal, bypassed the octy, and run with the octy, installed ALL new stock jet size complet K&N kits, installed ALL new S/S hardware, sync'ed ALL 4 carbs AND THESE P.O.S. CARBS DON'T WORK RIGHT. 1st, I started her up today after CLEANING and checking ALL settings / adjustments. She ran on full choke but would die if I tried to give her any gas at all, wouldn't run on half or no choke at all. I feathered the choke between full and half to drop the rpm down from 5000 to 2000 and let her warm up, still wont run with half or no choke, turned ALL 4 fuel mix screws out 1 full turn, same thing, wont idle or let me give it gas

carbs
Maybe the throttle shaft seals are leaking. If you soaked the carb bodies very long in cleaning solution, the seals may have been destroyed.put something smooooth betwen your legs, XS eleven

1 turn out on the idle mixture screws is probably too lean. You need to first get the idle mixture adjusted properly, this of course assumes that the carbs are truly clean through all the passages and that none of the idle mixture screws are broken off.Cy

Seals and idle screws
I don't soak them in carb clearner for just that reason, I remove all jets and everything except throtle plates and clean ALL holes corners, nooks crannies with carb cleaner and compresed air, I do soak all brass jets and metal parts in carb cleaner over night, then clear with compresed air.
As to the 1 turn out on mix screws, that was in add to the 1 1/2 I started at and done in steps to see if it would change anything, it didn't1979 XS1100 Special (Mad Max, OEM) Current

Hi Phill, glad you read this one, I respect your opinion very much as you have been a big help in the past to me and many others also. Yes, the holes are clear of broken screw tips (checked with tooth pick to be sure and not scar hole, next, replaced screws with the K&B screws provided in kit. Set them at 1 1/2 turns out being VERY careful not to break the new tips off. Backed them out to about three full turns in steps trying to get it to idle at all, no change I am running from a gas can supply turned into a 2nd tank to make adjusting easy / possable, with a new in line filter and running to the prim lines with the "run" lines pluged and, gas is flowing through the clear filter and it started and ran on choke when the carbs were installed emty before hook up to 2nd tank. I had 4 syc gauges hooked up and all were in syc when at full choke still wount idle or take any throtle "Sure pick a bad day to stop drinking, smooking crack, shootin H, sniffen glue"1979 XS1100 Special (Mad Max, OEM) Current

Floats
Floats are set at 25.7MM with micro slide "T" , all 4, both sides, no gasket contact, move free, stop air flow when bench tested upside down. What is the best way to MAKE sure the floats dont leak? Brass type, tested under gas with no bubbles or fuel inside when shook?1979 XS1100 Special (Mad Max, OEM) Current

K&l
I kept the old jets and stuff that were in the carbs when I bought the bike (don't know if OEM or not) Should I worry about the K&L stock replacement kit's that I installed, heard some on here say OEM or problems, and I got problems1979 XS1100 Special (Mad Max, OEM) Current

The K&L pilot jets are the ones that usually cause problems, although it is usually a rich condition. The proper pilots should have 6 air bleed holes in the sides. Double check that your fuel filter is pointing in the right direction and/or eliminate it. It sounds like low fuel level in the bowls to me, it would still run on full choke this way. I wouldn't worry about the needle/seats leaking for now, if they were, you'd have a puddle of gas.2H7 (79) owned since '89

Installed ALL new stock jet size complet K&N kits,///////////// Guessin' you mean K&L........either way, getting tuned and running right won't happen with those kits. Mikuni does there metering based on flow, other aftermarket.....who knows but are NOT the same. That goes for the pilot jet also............if jetting isn't Genuine Mikuni.........no joy......81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

Hey OEM, I have used the K&L kits on several bikes and carbs and never had a problem with them. I always get my kits form Georgefix on ebay, and he knows the XS11 carbs and parts very well.
Like Phil said, you will want to look at the pilot jets and make sure they have the proper holes in the sides. There are no less than three styles I am aware of, and only one will give you the right fuel mix. The VM style have eight total holes in the sides, two holes on all four sides. The N151 style have zero holes in the sides. Then there is the BS30/96 style that you want, they have a total of six holes, two in four sides, one in the other two sides.
I am guessing you have the wrong pilot jets. Knew an XSer in central Indiana that had the wrong pilot jets in, he was ready to throw the bike over a tall hill. We got the right jets in it, and she ran like a champ after that.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

I will second what you're already hearing. Go back to Mikuni jets. The issues you are having is why I am always preaching against KITS. I may have Mikuni stuff laying around, so let me know if you need some. To ID your original parts, look for the Mikuni symbol; small square in a larger one.'81 XS1100 SH

Gas
Yes. the fuel filter is flowing in the right dir. and i did end up with a puddel of gas after I shut it off, took out the plugs and cranked, gas shot out of #4 only, now new oil again when I get the bitch running i will check the bleed holes for 6 as I get to remove the carbs again I am somewhat of a pro at this now, even with the OEM air box There is only a doxen hoses an octy, a throtle cable that is a joy to get too, 4 manifolds and 4 air box conections. and NO room to get to any of it. I have loved this bike long enough With the carb's, octy, fuse box, pick up coil wires, gas leaking into the cyl's and spinning bearings, 2nd gear slip and shifting like a russian tractor And we wonder why they have no resale value, people are too smart. Man I fell in love with this bike in 1979 and could't afford one, bought a XS750 for price only, now i am thinking I was blessed and saved from this monster that is never satified, that 750 was the best machine I ever owned. I would set this one on fire if you could get any kind of return on insurance on this POS. It is the booze talking, when it stops raining in 4 MORE DAYS I will kiss it and gently pull out (the carbs that is) and explore every nook and cranny, ever so gently. Looking into every dark, unexplored spot, bursting forth with pulsing sprays of extasy (of carb clearner) then throbbing with controlled explosions (compresed air), then I will put it back in, slowly, making sure I hit all the right spots and conect to every fiber and port, and if she don't scream like she should then, Ill just hang myself1979 XS1100 Special (Mad Max, OEM) Current

Ok
Ok, let me make this a simple request, How do you know FOR SURE a float is good? I can buy new ones for $50.00 each, just $200.00 for some parts then spend many hours fixing so I might get $1800.00 for my bike ( the going price from what I have seen latly)1979 XS1100 Special (Mad Max, OEM) Current

Guess you could weigh each float...............but not sure what that has to do with maybe/maybe not having Genuine Mikuni jets installed.81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.
