Hey James,
The earlier models, 78 and 79 came with a kickstarter. IF you're talking about cranking it to start it, that's it. If you just want to rotate the engine, then you can use the large square bolt/type head on the ignition side timing cover, but you'll want to remove the spark plugs first, to release the compression tension. That nut can't handle much stress. If you need to crank it with more oomph, then would suggest you use the hex head nut on the ALT side under the alternator...take the ALT cover off. Do NOT try to actually start the bike with that off, it retains a plug at the bottom that keeps the oil galley sealed, and will blow out and pump oil all over your floor in a matter of seconds!
That nut loosens when turned CCW, but the engine also normally rotates CCW when viewed from the right side.

Cant run no battery
The TCI needs it. Without 10.8 volts it wont spark and start.

You have to have a battery to initially start the bike, as the alternator has to have an external voltage source to generate power. And you can't run the bike without a battery, even after getting it started, as that will kill the alternator and/or the regulator...Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two
