    Purchased 1979 XS 1100....It's Alive!!!

Just thought I would let everyone know that my Yamaha is ALIVE!!! I got it started today, and after LOTS of smoke (it hasn't been started in 25 years), it runs, and that is a good thing. No major BAD noised from the engine, but NOW the real work begins!!! No more pics....I was too busy being excited....at http://jimphoto.freeprohost.com/Yamaha but I will keep posting as I progress. Thanks for all your help and encouragement!!!

      Congrats! Great feeling, eh?

Some advice: Mine sat for 6 years (outside) and the valve stems got rusty on the valves sitting open on top of the cam lobes. When I got it running it ran ok but I had a minor backfire. This was a sticky valve. On the first serious test drive when the engine got nice and warm, @ about 4000 rpm, the piston hit and broke #3 intake valve and destroyed valve, head, piston etc.. In hindsight I should have pulled the head, removed, cleaned and lapped the valves. Instead, I'm trying to scrounge a motor. If you hear any upper-end rapping or any backfire pull the head...or you may have this:

Depends on what parts. If you are thinking of buying a 650 parts bike for your 1100, not a good idea, very few things will interchange.

            Hi Paul & welcome,
front wheel, speedo, headlight, twistgrip, signals, straight bolt-on.
XS650 front fender fits an XS11 Standard but NOT a Special.
Most other handlebar stuff, flasher unit, flasher canceller will bolt on but the wiring may have different coloring &/or plug-ins.
Front master cylinder has a smaller diameter that might just work on an XS11 Spl. (works on twin disk XS650 conversion).
Folding kickstart will fit the splines but may interfere with the sidecover & exhaust.
Gearshift will fit the splines but it's way shorter.
Apart from that, not much will swap.
