Thanks guys, it gets I have read everything from $4.00 bucks will improve by 100% to, "you need to spend $400.00 to improve 75% Here is one I found on Ebay, it is complet and looks like what I need and the $ are right?

I use them

I found a set of the Sylvanias in the clearance bin of my local Advanced Auto for $9.00 a few of years ago and grabbed them. I've been running them on my G and J ever since and the difference was substancial.
The only thing is that you have to adjust the reflector down somewhat because they seem to throw the beam higher than the std bulbs. This causes your low beam to be a bit shorter than usual but the additional brightness compensates for that.
As far as longevity.... I've run them for a couple of years +, with year around riding and about 5k to 8k miles a year. So far, so good. well worth the effort compared to the std bulbs.

That looks to be just a standard bulb. I'd think you would be better off to just go down and get a silverstar bulb for your housing you have, as a normal housing isn't going to work better than the one you have unless yours is messed up. The aftermarket one referenced by Steve uses different patterns in the glass that give better lighting than normal lenses, and you would still want to add a silverstar bulb to those as well, which means those setups are gonna run you close to $100 for a setup, or just spend the $25 or so on the silverstar and be good (if you lucky you might find them on special). I got the one that's a single step down from the top of the line silverstar, and I'd say it about doubled the amount of light that I was getting from the standard bulb that was in the headlight when I got it. The top of the line bulb is supposed to give something like 30 or 40% more light than the one below it, for about the same amount less life, but I think we are still talking at least a couple years of life at least, but I'm not sure. I've had mine in for almost 3 years, but it's the middle grade one, so it's supposed to last a bit longer.

The add "claims" Halogen lens and Halogen bulb? I "thought" that would mean a up-grade for the reflective lens as well as an upgraded buld Do you think it is just "hype"? My OEM lens is OK, but I thought this was a matched "pair" of components that worked togather to give you the best light

If you read the ad carefully, they're claiming an improvement over a 'sealed beam' headlight (not what was installed in the XS11 Special models that used a 7" round light), so that light would pretty much be the same as OEM. If the silvering inside your lens assembly is bad, this would be an improvement, but if yours is still good, it won't be.

The Cibies are expensive, but I've never been disappointed when I've swapped them in...

Thanks Steve, I will just replace the bulb with the new upgrade you guys are talking about My lens is fine, I just have to open her up to replace the front break light switch and that is a good time to upgrade, so it's off to Wally World for the best price on the new ones, Know the right part # for a 79SF?

I had a cheap HID. Didn't match up with the stock headlight lens well. In a fog I could see light leaking out all over the place. Less than half was getting where it was sposed to go, but it was still brighter than halogen. I musta touched it or something, cause the bulb didn't last a year. I went back to halogen, Silver Star. Pretty good. Got Silver Star Ultra, pretty better yet, but not HID good. It is leagal tho. I'm running it in a new H4 bucket with a smooth, clear lens with flutes in the shiny new reflector. Jury is still out. Harder to aim. It came with a blue 85/80. Running a Geezer reg/rec I never had power probs, but the bulb was blue and it just didn't seem very bright for all that power. Get more useful light from the Silver Star Ultra. Still not sure on keeping the lens, but it looks cool in the daylight.

They are still illegal though.

So is speeding. In my part of the country, this isn't something that is going to get you pulled over unless your blinding people. The kit I have have has a VERY good focus with the stock lens and keeps the light going where I want it. Plus, I don't ride in the dark all that often.

As for the comments on the color temperature, well, personally, I like WHITE light (aka: around 6500K like the sun) and not blue/purple light and not the normal yellow light either. The higher the color temperature, the more energy it takes to produce the light, so the less light you get for a given lamp power. Stick to the 5400K bulbs and no one is going be attracted to the color of the light in any way and you will have fantastic light output.
