Hi all, I just bought a 1980 XS1100 and was riding for about an hour and it was running great and then it started to misfire badly and after the ride I pulled the plugs they were powdery black, any suggestions out there, maybe too rich?, would a hotter plug help?,thanks

I suggest checking the pickup coil wires. A misfire because of plugs would have shown up well before an hour. Besides, if you put too hot a plug in there you'll just end up burning a hole in a piston.

Pickup wires are the most likely culprit. They will work good until a little heat gets into them and reduces conductivity if they are just starting to go bad.

Thank's Greg,Is there a help topic on how to check and repair the coil wires and what do you think is causing the dry black soot on the plugs?, it is also
visible on the end of the muffler too.

The pick up coil FAQ tech thread is here:
        http://www.xs11.com/xs11-info/tech-t...pictorial.html

As far as the sootyness of you plugs/exhuast. It might be because you're only getting on/off combustion in those cylinders that are affected by the pick up coil problem.

These XS11s are great bikes and there are plenty of people here to help with ANY questions.

          Misfire

I think I'll try a new set of plugs to see if it is a fouling problem caused by a too rich mixture first and then check the pickup wires, there is a wet nitrous system on this bike , rejetted 78 carbs also, and I don't want to run the nitrous so I may remove it and go back to a stock setup to eliminate any issues with all the tubing and connections.

I put in new plugs and tested my ignition wires and the intermittent miss was from #1 cyl ignition wire, could that mean the ignition coil is bad?

If it's just 1 cylinder it'll be a wire. Unscrew the cap from the wir and trim it back about a quarter inch and screw the cap back int the wire and see if that helps.
