Setting Pick up coils

Does anyone know the proper gap to set between the reluctor and the pick up coils.

I'm replacing mine and I forgot to take notice of what it was originallly set for.

Spec is .7mm

.5mm works for me

Are the pick up coils a wound magnet or a metal magnet with wires attached?
How common is it for them to fail?

Actually I don't think they are electomagnets, they are coils, the reluctor is a magnet and it causes a pulse in the coil due to the magnetism of the reluctor passing the core of the coil.

The reluctor may retain some magnetism because of it's enviroment but it's the other way around Cy. The signal is produced when the reluctor passes the electromagnet (coil) and breaks the field.

What your saying makes sense.
I ask because the piece of metal facing the reluctor is magnetic. Maybe it picked it up from the reluctor

Ok, we are BOTH wrong. The reluctor is indeed not a magnet, but the coil is NOT an electomagnet, it is a coil with a steel/iron core with a small magnet at the far end from the reluctor. The reluctor passing the end of the coil, causes the magnetic field to move which causes the change in resistance (actually it induces a current). Here is a link to information about it on megasquirts site that talks about it, since pickup coils are ONE of the things that can be used as a trigger for the megasquirt.
