  • XJ11 carb issues - resolved

So much has gone into getting this bike running properly and by far the greatest assistance in doing so has come from here at XS11. It's been difficult to get things fine tuned but over the last week I've had some better success.

I have the Jardine Spaghetti exhaust connected and for the air filter I have been using a cleaned but used paper air filter. No matter what I have done I haven't been able to get the bike to idle properly nor does it coast evenly when staying in one gear and maintaining a set speed; it would hesitate and be a bit jerky and though it had good acceleration, it just didn't play nice.

I finally decided to install the DynoJet kit for the later XS11/XJ11 and see if their kit would help. I removed the carbs and started doing the replacement & then I discovered the PO had changed the main jet size. I decided to go with the Dynojet stage 1 option but with the larger 128 main jet and then modify the filter to use a K&N material to make a XJ11 K&N air filter. I'd earlier bought the material from another lister who did the same thing with his old air filter (I followed his directions)

The difference in operation has been really remarkable and now that I've had a chance to check out before & after results I can say that it runs smoothly, has fabulous power throughout the power curve and the mileage has improved. I was getting between 28-32 depending on whether I was running lightly and not going over the limit or if I was putting it through it's paces.

I also went back and used the colortune, getting the orange & turning down till I got a dark blue flame and the firing in the cylinder looking constant, without hesitation in each cylinder. Carbtune flat level across the 4 metal bars.

I drove up to Boston & back this weekend (total of 220 miles) and checked the gas mileage while driving mostly at 65 but at times hitting it hard and burying the speedo & I got 39.91 MPG, 8 MPG better than anything before.

So the home-made K&N air filter in the stock airbox & the dynojet mods really made a remarkable positive difference.

And it starts up very quickly with maybe a second or less of turning over before the cylinders get air/fuel and it starts purring.

Congrats! I'm still working on get my XJ running right.

I completely disassembled my carbs, degreased, and carb dipped and they look beautiful now. I have a 4-1 Kerker, stock airbox with 120 main/50 pilot jets.

Because I had the carbs out, I figured it was a good time to pull the valve cover for painting and checking shims. I found some shims out of spec... on my build, I replaced valves and set the shims to spec... Apparently I didn't quite get them all right.. I just got my shim tool, so that's my next job, then back to trying to tune.
