  • Head Job :)

    Sorry could not help myself
Just replaced the cylinder head cover and gasket and plugs because of an annoying slow leak. Just putting everything back together again and want to avoid the same problem.
Is there a tip for avoiding future leaks in that plugged area? Should I add some gasket sealant just in the area around the plugs and/or all around the gasket also?

I use 3M Weatherstrip adheasive on the curved side that fits in the head. Helps hold them in place and I've never had a leak.

Thanks for replying. I will do that also, I was beginning to wonder how come no one chimed in.

I used a little bit of RTV to hold my cam plugs in place.
If you search my threads, you'll read about how I blew one of those suckers right out and across my carport.

I have been using Yamabond #4 on everything up top for awhile now. Works well on the half-moon plugs and also as a gasket material between valve cover and head. I just got tired of dealing with valve cover gaskets and tried it one day. Kept with it ever since.

Having said that, I am sure there are several high-temp RTV products that will give the same performance.

One other thing to look at is the half-moon plug itself. There is a small piece of sheet metal inside that sometimes will cut through the rubber part that and it is very hard to see and this can cause a small leak. So check the part out well before you re-install.

I remember reading in here somewhere that someone was going to try to machine some aluminum plugs with the lip on both sides so it wouldn't come out.

I think XSChop had the aluminum plugs.

For sealing the standard rubber/metal plugs make sure you clean the head and the plugs with something that removes oil but doesn't leave any residue. If there's any oil residue then whatever you use to seal the plugs won't hold and they'll leak or blow out of the head at some interesting time of their own choosing.
