  • Master Cylinder Reservoir

While my bike is down & waiting on ignition parts, I've decided to tackle the front brakes. Front is sticking, & I've ascertained from the repair section that there is likely a pluged orifice. What I cannot find is any information on replacing the reservoir. Mine has gone completely opauqe, and is all crackledy and kinda swollen looking. Is this only a cosmetic issue? How hard is it to obtain/replace just the reservoir? Thanks in advance.

It is a non replaceable part, only whole master cylinders exist new. It is usually just cosmetic for the most part. You can sand the outside down some to make it look a little better and then clear coat it.

Other than the 2 screws in the bottom you just twist and pull up on the reservoir to remove it.

My special doesn't have screws in the bottom. That was just on the earlier ones I think. The later ones the 4 screws that hold the lid go all the way through the reservoir and into the MC itself.

Nate's right about that reservoir. Can't buy 'em separatly.

The problem with removing it is getting it to seal up again. Can't get the o rings either. I had to reuse my old o ring in conjuction with some 3 bond to get mine to stop leaking after a rebuild.

The '78-79 standards had the reservoir retained by two screws and a plate in the bottom; all others are like Greg says.

And any of them are tough to find in nice shape....

          master cylinder

You can replace these with a brand new, solid chunk of metal, master cylinder
          aftermarket type.
There're quite a few on ebay. If you don't care about being original, they go for around $50- 80.

I've had them on 2 of my xs11's & they worked just fine.

The bad: You have to convert the right side mirror to conventional thread (like the left one).

Mike's XS has original type master cylinders. Just buy one for dual disc brakes. Some of theirs have Yammi mirror mount.

Parts-N-More] may have them too, but I no longer know how to search their site.

thanks everyone. I'll see if it leaks after the rebuild. If so I'll probably go with Mike's new unit.

Are you sure it's not a buildup of old brake fluid behind the square o-ring in the caliper? Scrape it with a single edged razor blade and clean the grove out.
