  • New coils

Hello, new guy here, glad I found this site. I've been reading top to bottom!
I want to buy new coils and some of the threads are a few years old. Is Dyna still the place to buy coils for my 79XS11? Anyone have a good part number? Thanks a lot. I just really want to get out and ride again!

    Hey there AMMOSS,

Check out this link on Ebay:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Dynat...-/380141625545

They were posted under the wrong spelling of Dynatek on purpose for folks that would have spelled it with tech!!!

But these are a the 3 ohm style. Dyna still sells the 1.5 ohm which is what you "COULD" use on your 79, but with the ballast resistor in the running circuit once the bike is running, the coils only see ~9 volts instead of the full 12 volts. The Green 3 ohm coils can run on 12 volts all day and will then provide the full sparking power all the time, not just during the starting mode that the 1.5 ohm coils do.....during starting the TCI bypasses the ballast resistor and sends the full 12 volts for stronger starting spark!

With the 3 ohm style, you just bypass the resistor...plug the red/white wires on the harness side of the ballast resistor into each other, viola, 12 volts all the time!!!

I would highly suggest the Dyna's vs. anything from MikesXS because you get a 1 YEAR WARRANTY with the Dynas, you don't get SQUAT with the MikesXS ones!!!!!

I went ahead and ordered that one. Do I bypass the ballast resistor, or leave it in?

You bypass the resistor for any 3 ohm coil. The TCI will see the same amount of resistance on the line with the 3 ohm coil alone, vs. the old 1.5 ohm coil and 1.5 ohm resistor.

The Dyna kit is only the coils, you'll still need to get the wires and caps. Depending on the condition of your OEM caps...you can take them off and check them with an ohmmeter, if they show ~5 k ohms, they will be good, but if they show much higher, then possibly corrosion has formed between the internal resistor and the connections inside. You can take the cap apart..unscrews from the spark plug side, and check, clean the resistor, measure it directly, if still high, then it's toast and get new ones.

The coils will accept 7 or 8 mm wire..solid core is what you want, from local bike shop, or online. I saw a thread/reply from someone about the wires they got from MikesXS arcing and such, so I can't recommend them, but I don't have any personal experience with them. I bought some 8mm wire online a few years ago from an ebayer. Was able to actually get colored!!

Also, you'll need to get the fancy brass metal clips that fit onto the end of the wires that plug into the coils. Hopefully you can find them as part of a wire set depending on where you find/get them.

The thing you need is the correct primary resistance; 3 ohms if you're not running a ballast resistor, 1.5 if you are. Higher resistance can reduce the output to the spark plugs, lower will draw too much current and smoke the TCI. You do have to be a bit careful though; some of the newer bike ignitions have 'dwell control' built into them (limiting the amount of time the coils are 'on') so those coils can't be used on the 'old' XS TCI without risking burning them up even if the primary resistance is 'right'.

RE the "brass metal clips" for plug wire ends to "plug into" the coils ~~ (?) the type that would shove up onto, and clip onto a terminal recessed up in the coil; or the type that would make end of plug wire "solid", and push into the "connect" hole at the coil ?

Fixin' to get a set of these Dynas.

                          Hey Carlton,

The second type, the Dynas have just a recessed HOLE in the coil, so you need a "MALE" style brass plug that fits onto the wire and is a pressure fit inside/into the dyna coil recess!

Thank you TC for that IMPORTANT information. Would you believe, there is no way, nowhere, no how, that that information is to be found on the Web! Not on YouTube having to do with install applications. Not even on the Dyna site, itself! I'm going to try and fit from this set of Magnecor plug wires ~~> http://www.ultrarev.com/4500.html?quantity=1

I've had the "Mike'sXS 'black coils' " for three years. One of the coils is not giving me a reading through the plug wires, and I've had some kind of firing gremlin giving me grief for a good while now, that I was fairly certain that one or both coils were the reason. It will run, but does not want to catch and start proper, especially when hot. I had already narrowed down to make this change, even before your own black coil failed. I've been following your coil threads and posts. I never had liked the way the plug wire was to attach to the black coil; that's a cheap product without much pride from the manufacturer to make 'em that way.

IIRC from the pictures, those hook up the way most of the other XS models spark plug wires hook up to their coils. If connected correctly it's a pretty darn weatherproof connection, quite a bit more so IMHO than the press in type, although I'm not sure the press in type isn't good enough, but the press in type will work with non solid core wires, the type used on the black coils AFAIK will work ONLY with solid core wires.
