  • And these are the Brakes!

Well one thing lead to another, did the fork spring upgrade and decided to go over the complete brake system as others have suggested. I have most everything apart, but i'm stuck at the m/c breakdown this is as far as I got with it

I tried pulling that rubber cover off but did not want to rip it. I believe there is a clip keeping the cylinder kit in place. How do I get in there to clean it out?

There is a wire clip that holds the rubber boot in place. The reservoir is pressure fit and can be removed by twisting.

Yup, twist and pull the reservoir, I had one that was really gunked up and I took a piece of floss and ran it under and around the reservoir to help break it loose and get the gunk out.

Unfortunately yeah you gotta pull the rubber boot off and its probably going to rip. I finally used a pick and poked a hole at the bottom and managed to hook it good enough to pull it out with just the single hole. After that there will probably be a plastic ring then a clip and it should all come apart.

How can I get to the clip without tearing the boot. As far as the reservoir goes I don't think I want to mess with it because other posters have said that removing it destroys the o ring and it's hard to find a replacement.

It is just there to keep sure and water out of the end of the shaft there. It is not going to hurt anything if it is not there.

I think you can still get the boot, not sure though.

You don't need to tear it up. You need a right angle snap ring pliers. That tool will make the problem go away.

If you can't find one locally, Mike's XS has it.

Explain how that helps get the boot out? The snap ring is under the boot.

                    Kits

I think you can still get the boot with the rebuild kits.

OK...I stand corrected. It looks like the boot comes in the rebuild kit. Still...how will you get the snap ring in and out without snap ring pliers?

I seem to remember that my '79SF has a wire clip (like a c-clip, but made of wire) on top of the boot. It was way down in the bottom and you had to move the boot out of the way to see it. The real c-clip is under the boot.

The manual says nothing about a clip that secures the boot, so I guess Nate is right.

I had one MC that had a little ring like what you are talking about, that is the metal that is inside the base of the boot. The boot is just friction fit.

It does look like most of the rebuild kits do have the boot included in it.

I've done a few of these and the boot fits over a lip much like the dust covers of your forks. Just get under it and go around to loosen it and pull it back. And just as Marty explained, there"s a "circlip" olding the guts of the MC in place. Remove the circlip with the correct tool and the guts of the MC will come out with the plunger shaft.
Just remember to lubricate it with brake fluid when you put it back together so the rubber piston cups don't fold back on you. And, yes, do clean your spooge hole when you've got it torn down. It's the best time to do that.
