  • Rounded Bleeder Nut

I bought an 1981 Eleven Special about a month ago and I've just finished my first repair. I had a brake pedal that wouldn't pop up after I pressed it. That I fixed. However, when I checked my rear brake fluid level (The master cylender is too aged to see the fluid clearly) I managed to let in some air and now I need to bleed my back brake.

The problem is that the nut for the bleeder nozzle is rounded and I can't get it to turn. I was thinking about replacing it with a speed bleeder but I'm unsure about the size. Also, what would be the best way to remove the old bleed screw kit?

I won't guess on the size but if you are bleeding them anyways, I say take a torch to the are around the bleeder and grab the bleeder with a vice grip and it should come out.

There is no "nut" or "kit" involved. It's all one piece, with an 8mm hex portion to the body. Not sure on the thread size, but they're pretty standard at any auto parts store. Like Nate said, heat up the caliper with a torch, grab the bleeder with some vice-grips, and start with a wiggling motion to break the crud up. Once it lets go, you can just unscrew the whole thing. Be careful to not break the bleeder off in the hole - they are impossible to get out once that happens. DAMHIK

Unless your planning to clean the caliper anyway, I'm not sure I would heat the fluid in the caliper right away. Try liquid wrench or PB blaster first. Just my opinion.

          Thanks for all the advice.
I think I'll try the penetrating oil first. Knowing my luck I'll have to use the torch too, but I might as well start simple.
Thanks again! I'll reply again once I got it fixed.

it also helps to put a shank of a drill bit into the bleeder's hole so it doesn't collapse and break off when squeezed with vise grips

Your joking, right Nate?..........................brake fluid and torch, not a good combination unless your lookin' for an adventure where you may not wanna be present........just sayin'....

He is bleeding the system so no problem removing the caliper and doing it.

                    Fix

I would soak it with pen. oil over night. You can try an easy out as bleeder screw is hollow or cut a grove into the bleeder to fit a flat blade screw driver. If you have a hammer tap impact tool, tap it easy till it comes free. He is a link to one source for a speed bleeder for your bike:
