  • Electrical Questions - No Spark

I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I've got an SG that stopped sparking quite a while ago, and while it's been down, I've fixed several mechanical issues, but have been putting off the electrical, because I don't know much about it.

Anyway, the bike cranks and all of the lighting works, but it just won't fire the plugs. I checked the pick up coil, and found a severed wire and repaired it, and the resistance was reading perfect until I moved it. I've heard that multiple break in these wires are common, so I checked a replacement assembly from a parts bike, and it measued perfect, and even wiggling and tugging on the wires didn't disrupt the reading. I replaced the pickups with the ones from the parts bike, and they're reading good. I set the pick up clearances at .028" (.71 mm), hit the starter button, and... nothing.

I also checked the ignition coils. Primary lines read perfect, but the reading through the caps was tricky to get a reading to show up, so I actually pulled the caps off and measured, and I got a reading right around 15K ohms on all of the leads without caps. I was getting a resistance reading through the caps themselves, but I can't recall what they read off the top of my head, and I'm not near my bike right now. Anyway, after that, I guessed that that seemed normal, so I suspected the dreaded black box failure. Luckily, my brother has as SH and I put my black box on his and his bike fired right up. I also put my spark plugs in his bike, and they worked too. I'm not really sure what else the trouble could be. Anyone that can provide a little direction toward what else could potentially cause the loss of spark would be my hero. I wish that I understood electrical systems, but I'm brand new to electrical, and could really use a lot of help.

    Thanks in advance.

People have mentioned here that the ends of the HT leads can go bad where they join the suppressor caps. Snipping a bit off the leads and re-attaching the caps has cured it. It seems a bit odd that all four don't work though.

Suppressor caps usually do have a built-in resistor, so what you said re resistance sounds right.

Have you actually removed the plugs, laid them on the cylinder head and turned the engine over, finding no spark? Rather than cranking the engine over and it not firing? You are 100% sure that there is no spark at the plugs?? Your plugs and black box seem fine. You've renewed the pickups and leads. So that really leaves the HT caps and the coils.

If your model has a ballast resistor (silver oblong box under the fuel tank left side... two red wires going into it), it may have blown but usually you get a spark when you press the starter buton and it stops when you release it.

Personally, I think the best test for an ignition coil is connecting up a plug and turning the engine over. I've never really trusted the multimeter readings etc. You can't go wrong laying the plugs on the head and cranking the engine over to see if there's a spark.......

Unplug the tipover switch and re-test.

There is a dynamic test for the pickups and TCI here:

I did lay the plug on the engine and crank it, and I'm 100% positive there's no spark. I also checked the ignition coil spark plug caps off of the parts bike and got the same reading as the ones that are on there now. That why I figured that maybe it was normal.

I didn't even think of the tip over switch. I'll check that tonight.

Bear in mind that just one pickup wire failing can result in no spark at any plug.

I don't know why it should, but it happened to me once.

Did you resistance check the whole pickup circuit ? (i.e. from the TCI plug) 'cos it could be a failure between the pickup wires and the TCI plug.
