  • Losing fire as I drive

I'm a little stuck on this one. My fire seems to shut down one cylinder at a time as the bike gets warmer. It'll be fine when I start it, good when I start driving, the I lose fire to one cylinder at a time. I can put my hand on the certain pipes immediately after stopping. usually I'd lose #4 then #3. last night I lost #1 #3 and #4, stalled out completely. wouldn't start again for about 20 minutes, then it just barely got me home. New BP6ES plugs gapped at 35, Mikes green coils last year, ballast resistor is bypassed. replaced TCI last year. Any help is great.

Nothing makes immediate sense of it, perhaps it is really fuel related? Have you checked the gas cap vent? Have you put in line fuel filters in? The sequencing and such do not make any electrical connection to me (no pun intended).

Pickup coil wires will cause pairs to cut out, and the pairs 1 and 4 or 2 and 3, which is why this doesn't make electrical sense. Now spark plug wires have been known to make a single plug not fire (which is strange cause they are paired too), and being right there on the head can be heat related, as can the plug caps. I'd make sure the plug wire ends look good, I'd check the resistance of the plug caps AND I'd do the check of the pickup coil wires just to be safe (even though it doesn't sound to me like a probable cause it's still worth checking, and motoman does have years of experience with these bikes).

Just came back in, pulled the caps off and they looked a little corroded on the wires. I cut all the wires back 1/2 inch, dielectric grease, put it back together............ working great!! (or at least on the test run, full power at all rpms) thanks!

Those ends can go bad too, so if the problem returns you might look at replacing them. A new set shouldn't be any more than $20 from most any metric bike shop.

Yup, I got a set for about that from my local cyclegear, they had a complete assortment, even had different colors, and just about all the styles, and probably 3 or 4 of each type as well.

I had gone to my dealer and they actually sent me to the local Napa auto parts who just gave me a blank stare, that store is no longer open BTW (the napa not the dealer, I've been going to that Yamaha dealer as long as I've had a Yamaha (or close to it, at least as long as I've had one in this area, I had it up in Tacoma first))

now if I go with a non-resistor cap, instead of the 5kohms, what should I expect the result to be? will it hurt anything?

You will piss off everybody you ride near. The reason for the resistor caps is to prevent interference with car audio systems, remove those and you WILL interfere unless you go to resistor type spark plugs at the same time.

If there's no performance difference I'll just stick to the resistor caps,

Did you take it for a good, hot, long ride yet? working? I had one that acted the same way and it was the pickup coil wires. pickup coil wires. pickup coil wires.
Did anyone bring up the pickup coil wires yet???
