  • xs11 / xs850 rear wheel

Will the rear wheel off a 850 work on a 1100 and is it a direct swap. I bought a couple wheels with good tires for 20.00 at a swap .

I have an 11 special and I've got an 850 wheel on it now. Wheels interchange fine mechanically. Check the size though, 850s had 16" on up to 18" I believe depending on the model.

They had an 18" wheel on the back on some of them? Hmm, probably not many tires in that size though huh? And fitment would be pretty tight in there .

I just checked it is a 18 rear and 19 front.
Now what effect will it have on gearing ?

Should be great on the highway. Tall geared.

The XS11 already has a 19" front so nothing there. The specials have a 16" and standards have 17" so it would raise the gearing a bit, probably be a bit like putting the 850 FD on a standard gear wise just about, plus it would raise the seat height, and reduce clearance between the wheel and the fender, making it harder to get the wheel in and out. It also might be hard to fit the tire into the swingarm space as well, which might be another issue. I'd also check on availability of tires, cause that also might be an issue, how many different makes and types of tires are available in that size? That's one of the issues for the 17" wheel on the standards, the choices on tires is a little contrained because a lot of tires are not made in that size. Sometimes it's not a matter of what tire is best for the bike, but rather what tire you can get, and what tire out of what is available is least bad .

Standard & Special XS650s have the same rear wheel size spread. After a few swaparounds for style's sake I found that
if the wheels have stock section tires on them (110/90-18 & 130/90-16) the difference in tire OD won't be very much at all.
About the same as the OD difference of a new tire vs a same size bald tire.

I heard that in order to put an XS850 rim and tire on an XS1100 you need to change some spacers and such on the caliper side. Is this true? I am looking to do a conversion myself.

That depends on which model you start with and which wheel you're using. If you have a standard with a 17" wheel and stick with that size, no mods needed. If you've got a 16" wheel, and again match size, the same. But if going from one size to the other, then you need the 'matching' spacer(s) and caliper 'torque' bracket or the brake caliper will be misaligned...

I'll add that going to a 18" wheel will cause you issues with finding a proper-sized tire, as these will have a considerably lower load rating compared the OEM and current aftermarket sizes.
