  • Tranny Problem

When I gear down into 4th, the shifter drops all the way down and I have to toe it up each time to continue gearing down. Any idea as to what my problem might be??

Looks like it's the return spring on the gearshift shaft. It sounds like it's jumped off where it's supposed to locate. I doubt it's snapped, as I don't think they do that. If you lean the bike on the side stand and remove the shifter casing, you'll see it on the inside. It's an easy job.

Broken return spring. Pull the shift cover off (rectangular shaped cover on left side of bike that the shift lever rod goes through.) On that rod the shift lever attaches to, under the cover is the shift lever return spring.

Here are a couple pics to show where it is..its on the back side of the shift pawl that the shift lever attaches to...,

A kind of fuzzy closer pic,,,you can see one side of the spring is painted yellow....

Since the side stand is on that side of the bike, you either need to drain the oil first, or set something up to let you lean the bike to the right side about as far or a little further than the side stand lets it lean.

This next question should put to rest any thoughts as to my mechanical skills. I assume that the riders peg bolt screws into the frame and that to remove it all I need to do is turn it counter clockwise. The reason I ask is that it seems that when I do it is very hard to turn and does not seem to be loosening. I've ordered the parts which will be in Tuesday, drained the oil and now I'm trying to remove the side cover, first by removing the peg and then the gear shifter once the peg is gone. Can someone steer me it the right direction?

You don't need to remove the peg, just rotate it a bit to get access to the cover allen screws. That bolt doesn't thread into the frame, it goes all the way across the bike and has a nut at the other peg. Loosen the nut, then move the peg.

I've found that a set of 'ball-end' allen wrenches can be very handy for getting to some of those semi-blocked screws...

I'm going to make an assumption that when you say "riders peg", you are referring to the operator's foot pegs.
If so, the bolt that holds them on is one of the engine support bolts, and goes all the way through the frame, engine, and both pegs. Loosen the bolt and nut until you can drop the peg arm out of the way. CZ

Is the foot peg in a different location on the Standards? On ym Specials I have never had to move the foot peg to remove the shift cover...It helps for the clutch cover, but never an issue with shift cover I can recall.

As far as I know they're the same pegs in the same place, but when I changed the covers on mine (I didn't install the pretty freshly-polished covers until after the motor was back in the frame), there was one shifter cover screw that you couldn't get at due to the peg. You could almost get it, but not quite....

Rotating the peg slightly gave access to it....

I had to turn my peg as well to get that cover off, so there must be some sort of change.

Well as usual, I couldn't wait for an answer (something I'm going to learn to do) and pulled the bolt right out. Now it won't go back in and I don't want to take a hammer to it. Will I need to jack the bike up a bit to realign the hole? I can't wait to finish this and start on the front forks!! But that's another story.

You will need to put a jack under the engine (use a board to spread the force out on the tranny pan) and lift the engine till the bolt slides in. If the engine actually rocked forward and is to high, you will need to raise up on the front of the engine.
