I am going through my carbs and see that the needle setting is set to the richest grove on all 4 carbs. I plan to move it to the center grove as all things on the bike are OEM now. I was having what seemed like a knock and stumble around 2500-4000 rpm. I see that this setting controls mid range. Do you think it could cause what feels/sounds like a knock

It certainly COULD, but you will answer that when you get the clip position where it belongs and see if the symptom goes away.'78 E "Stormbringer"

Thanks guys, I get that, after I put my carbs back on, adj, install all the other stuff and hook up everything, I will know it that solved my problem Then if not I can tear down everything and start guessing all over again Is there anyone that "knows" if that can cause my "noise / stumble Or do I just become an exbert at R/I of all my bike parts and find out myself? The problem is your looking for an absolute answer, and there isn't one. It CAN cause the problem, so making the change CAN fix it, but it MIGHT not. Any time you change things it mix, adjust and retest, then repeat until desired results are achieved. If your lucky, you might get it on the first or second try, if not, it might take many tries to get it right. Your best bet is always to start from a known set of settings and work out from there.Cy

I will do the trial and trial till fixed, thanks1979 XS1100 Special (Mad Max, OEM) Current

The "knock" concern that you describe is the reason I said that the needle setting COULD be the trouble.
Normally only diesel fueled engines display a 'fuel knock' when too much fuel is introduced.
Gas fueled engines are not terribly notorious for this but, at the needle seting you said you found, that is not outside the realm of possibilities. It is certainly far richer than I could possibly imagine needing outside of anywhere but maybe death valley in a snownstorm.'78 E "Stormbringer"

Thanks
Thanks Mike, I don't think it is pre-detonation as I am know that kind of sound from working on many kinds of motors. It is more like a rattel and shutter that goes away completly once over that RPM I have the carbs off, will clean "again" (I see why some of you guys don't use the OEM breather LOL) and I will set all 4 to the richest "float" setting recomended and move the needles to the mid OEM setting. Then I will do battle with that breather to put them back on and see what is up. The bike runs great and pulls like crazy except for that one RPM range Thanks for your input and I will not let this beat me1979 XS1100 Special (Mad Max, OEM) Current
