I see there is a different part # for Special gas tanks from 79-80-81. What is the differance? and can they be interchanged without mod's ect?

The different numbers reflect the paint colors Yamaha used on the various years, that's all. They'll all interchange....Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Thanks Steve, I have three tanks and wanted to use the best one on my bike, it looked the same but it had a diff part #, that clears it up

If I remember correctly....a special tank on a standard bike requires seat mods.....At this time:

I believe Fred had to trim his seat pan back just a touch for the Standard tank to fit on his Special. He has described the process as loosening the seat cover from the "fingers" in the front, trim the metal and foam back as needed, pull the seat cover back over and use glue or pop rivets or whatever is needed to re-attach.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!
