  • 79 special / carbs drawing air , cant stop it .

hay I have 79 xs1100 special took off stock air box cleaned carbs , put on new carb holders, install carbs and emgo filters I know all I can afford now)
the carbs #2and #3 wont seal where they go into the holders have new clamps and all dont get it ??? #1 and #4 carbs seal tight and pass the carb cleaner at idle trick and dont rev up the motor, but #2 and #3 carbs spray carb cleaner at the carb to holder joint and bike revs up ,

do I need to build a braket to hold the carbs up and more forward like the stock air box does ???

    any thoughts???

1st, it does sound liek you may not have them all the way into the holders, or your clamps could be out of the groove somewhere. Check that, I know its hard to see that on those middle carbs in some places.

As to your question about holders, I am sure soem may disagree, but I belive you do need to have a bracket to support the carbs from the back. I have seen a couple where they built a bracket that attaches to the frame where the airbox used to. Without the bracket, your putting to much weight and stress on the intake boots.

Hate to tell you this but I would pull the carbs off again and check the interface between the carb holders and the head. That is a notorious place for vacuum leaks. Some guys use a gasket, others do not. Some use RTV, others rely on another type of gasket maker. But whatever you do, you should check this place.
