I have a 1978 xs1100 E. i need a new back tire i want to go with Metzeler ME880 marathon tires. I can not find a 130/ 90- 17 in metzeler. I have seen on here that the 140/80-17 will work, but i do not want to buy a tire and it not fit. Any one know for sure what size will work?? Thanks for any help.

130/90-17 works for every tire and is the correct tire. The apparently are one or two specific tires (can't rwmber off the top of my head) that you can wedge in a 140 but it is really pushing it and barely clears the swingarm.Nathan

Metzler has the ME88 for the 17" wheel, thats what I run. I really liked the look of the ME880 but dont have a 16" rear wheel like the specials so decided to get "second best" and went with the ME88. I like the tire a lot and it seems to have great wear and stiction. GL'79 XS11 F

back tire for 78xs1100E in metzeler
I have seen the ME 88 in 130/90-17. not a bad looking tire just wondering if it will get the mileage that the ME 880 marathon tires do. I have a ME 880 on front and it has 7k on it and it still looks new!!! been running a continental tour on back. I like the continental tour but i have to have a new one every two years, i have 8500 on it now and all ready have some flat spots on it. I like to have some tread on the road. thanks to every one for the infromation. Every one is so helpful on this site, thanks again.!!

Your not going to get as many miles out of the rear tire as out of the front. Typically I've seen pretty much 2 to 1, with about 2 rear tires to each front. Riding style and weight has a lot to do with it too. Also, making sure you keep the tires properly inflated can make a HUGE difference in how long the tires last, and many manufacturers have recommendations for tire pressure for specific bikes, if not, they may have it by the weight of the bike, and as little as a few LBS low on the tire pressure can reduce tire life by as much as 25%.Cy

I have about 2000 miles on my ME88 right now and it has lots of tread depth left. It definitely looks like it could go for 8k and I like the way it feels in the corners, nice and firm. I'm running a Venom on the front and love that tire. Looks like it will have to be changed after 2 seasons, would like to get a rear that I can get 2 riding seasons out of...'79 XS11 F
