  • Its All About Timing

According to the Clymers manual the timing is non-adjustable on my 80. Is this true? Do I have to replace the timing assembly if the timing is off?

Thanks again all for your help.

    Hey Ozz,

In 80 they used the BREAK OFF bolts to secure the timing plate IN PLACE, you will need to drill them out, and then just replace with regular bolts/nuts that you can re-tighten/loosen to your hearts content, and the slots on the timing plate will allow you to adjust the timing as well. In 81 they filled in the slots so there really is NO adjustment to the plate...but they built in the cent. timing curve into the TCI anyways!

I thought that was only the XJ that didn't have slots. I thought that the 81 just didn't have the centripetal advance. And I thought even the pictures of the XJ's I'd seen had some adjustment for timing adjustment for initial timing adjustment.

I had a feeling that my timing was off. I just could not believe how much.

It was on the mark between the F and the T. Not too sure how many degrees off that is though.

          All better now.

Now if it would stop pouring out I can go for a test ride.

            Hey Cy,

Don't know if you'll see this since you stated you may be leaving the site?

Here's a shot of my 81SH, note the 4RO on the timing plate and the absence of open slots where it's mounted to the case. Yes, they did away with the Mech. Cent. Adv. parts, and I guess they decided "we" didn't need any adjustability anymore?

Thanks, I did state is as being not sure because I wasn't sure. But I've decided at least for now that I'm just going to ignore Steve outside of his official duties any time we disagree. It's just not worth what it does to my blood pressure. Any time I disagree with him it turns into the same thing, and I'm just not going to let it go there anymore, so once he's chimed in, no matter how wrong I believe him to be, I'm going to keep quiet.

He's made it clear (at least in my eyes) that my input is not desired if it differs from his.
