So some of you noted from pictures I posted my 80 XS Special is missing the right front caliper. So looking around I did found a 78 XS1100 brake port with hoses for the front. And a caliper for a 80 Special. Question being will the 78 stuff fit my 80? More so the hoses. Like to get it back to having both front brakes working. Also came across a deal on ebay from a 78 xs1100 with both front hoses and calipers. But it's my understanding the special has longer forks or reach because of the axle location????

Second, in the repair manual it tells me to use a special gauge in the tool kit to check gear lube. What if one is missing this gauge? What's the best way to check it??

Sorry for the basic questions. still learning about the bike.

Or if anyone here has some parts let me know!

    brakes & tool

Brakes: Sorry, they're not the same. You need caliper from a Special. Standard calipers are completely different. I might have a R side caliper that needs rebuilding (cleaning?). I'll look today. I might not.

Tool: The little tool is a little white plastic dipper with gauges on bothe ends for the middle & final drives for dipping. They come up on ebay from time to time. I'm pretty sure there's a thread somwhere on here for making a substitute. It's pretty simple, but, must be exact.

Good Luck. I'll PM you about the caliper.

PS: There's a set of used Stainless brake hoses on Ebay right now. opening bid is $45.00.

the calipers are usually on ebay regularly. finding decent pistons for said calipers is the hard part.

                  Hey Steve,

I added that link to the LINKS forum for easier finding by the members.

Team...if your machine shop fellow can make them and not too expensively...the ones in that Link Steve provided were ~$25.00 each, and Stainless steel, but Aluminum would provide a little less unsprung weight, and they don't RUST either, they do/can corrode though, sorry for the runon sentence....anyways, might be able to make some $$ from the sell of the pistons to members here IF they can offer a better price??

I was looking at trying to make some myself, and was thinking that the piston doesn't really NEED to be hollowed out in the middle IF using Aluminum, could provide additional strength, but then would add to the weight!

Ideas/thoughts on this from other members with machining experience?

And yes, Team, you'll want to get SS brake lines, don't go putting on OLD or NEW OEM styled vinyl lines! It's one of the best mods to improve the braking performance and feel for these old brakes!!
