The confusion I was having with which pilot jets came about from pictures I found on the internet.
Seems they were mismarked or just the wrong jets in the pictures.
The post from LarryM with the cut away drawings showed me what I really wanted to know.
I did go up one size on the pilots,(from 45's to 47.5's) and the problem is a whole lot less noticeable.
Rode about a 100 miles yesterday and I could probably live with it he way it is.
I will go ahead and try the next size up this week and see what happens.
Thanks for all the info so far and sorry about any percieved attitude.

personally 47.5 pilot jets are 2 big for the xs, did u try richening the mixture screws out a turn or 2? If u do try the 47 pilots, once fitted if the engine idle doesnt die or the engine idle increases when the mixture screw is lightly seated then ur pilots are 2 big.

Well the 47.5 pilot jets have made a big improvement.
Going to get the carbs sync'd this week.

        Settings are as follows.

        Air screws 1 turn out.
Clips on needles are in the center position.
        Main jets are 140's
        Pilot jets are 47.5's

Just so you know the "air screws" on these carbs is actually for fuel. They meter the amount of fuel is allowed into the air stream flowing into the intake.
