  • High idle

So today I pulled my carbs to adjust float levels to stop a leak. When I put the carbs back on the bike idled at around 5k. This was not happening yesterday when I rode. I checked throttle cable and there was no change. Checked the sync and it was fine. I have backed out the idle adjuster all the way. Could I be needing to rejet to get more fuel from running pods? I'm just confused why it started happening. Any ideas?

Vanquisher, does the engine go right to 5,000 RPM when you start it?

I know you said you checked the cable but if it's straight to 5K and the idle screw doesn't control the idle then the most likely problem is that the throttle cable is sticking or it's not seated in one of the cable guides.

When it is started it will climb to the 5k range in about 5 seconds. I tried completely disconnecting the throttle cable from the carbs, and I still had the increase.

Did you check that you tightened all the clamps at the engine side of the carbs? Did you pull the bank apart when you cleaned them and somehow the synchronizing mechanism did not get back together quite right?

Just a couple stabs in the dark.

Check for free play at the throttle.

If you have none, the tang that receives the cable at the carb end got bent when reinstalling the carbs. (Happens very easily) With the tang off just a bit, the bike will rev high as soon as you start it.

Where was the leak from? Have you had the leak a long time, or did it begin suddenly? Why did you think it would be cured by adjusting float levels, as opposed to anything else on the carbs (eg dirt in, or a sticking float needle, or a leaking float, or stuck float?

                high rev

Hay Van....let me chime in here. I had the same prob with a 81 Kawasaki 1100. At one time it was the lead piece at the end of the throttle cable cocked a bit in the carb actuator arm.......before that it was leaking carb boots ( ones between carbs and cyl heads). Hope this helps.

Well I got the high idle fixed. Pulled the carbs off again and just made sure everything was put on right. When I slapped the carbs back on the bike idled just fine. So I am not sure what I did but it did the trick. Still have a little bit of a leak from #4, so I am going to try running some seafoam through it to see if that will help.

Van, I had the same issue about a month ago. two problems caused this. First was a vacuum leak thru the carb boot to engine casket on #4. I found it while running the engine and spraying contact cleaner at the connections.
The other issue was my carbs weren't synked because the carb stick wasn't calibrated. Fixed those and runs great now.
