Fender choices?

I have a '78 Standard that I want to update a bit. Are there any cruiser fenders that will fit with some minor mods? I hate the plastic and chrome two piece rear fender this has but I also realize it may require some modification on the rear of the frame behind the mounts. This might be a pipe dream, I don't know, I'm sort of thinking out loud right now.

Hi Jim,
you can get steel one piece rear fenders from any chopper shop.
Trouble with one piece fenders is getting the wheel out.
Steal from Royal Enfield, undo 4 bolts and the entire rear fender lifts off.

I put a later model sportster fender on the rear of mine. No trouble getting the tire off. I can send you a pic if you like, no photo bucket account. I also cut off the struts going back to the signal mounts and added simple struts in place. PM me your e-mail and I'll send a couple pics.

Just about any '03-back Sportster rear fender will work, as they're all the same width and will fit between the XS frame rails. The only major differences you'll find is the location/number of mounting holes and the '99-up use a different taillight. The newer Sporty fenders are wider and will be a tougher swap. If you want a different taillight, look for an aftermarket 'blank' fender, but these can be be pretty rough stampings so expect to do a lot more pre-paint prep work...

Alas, if I used the correct name; mudguard a whole bunch of North Americans would post in to mock me.

I found a softail fender online for about 80 bucks. Had to prep and paint, but it was a pretty nice fit without having to chop or mod anything. Just a few holes drilled and a couple bolts and spacers and voila! Looks kinda weird with a stock seat though. I had to make one of my own. But the nice thing is if I decide to, I can un-bolt everything and put it right back to stock.

yes indeed I have a Gibson eb2 . An H22 in the closet and the J bass is the one that gets gigged studioed and just played

seen an xs with a touring fender

I saw a pic of a xs 1100 with a harley touring fender looked real good I am working on same idea myself!

I went to the local bike salvage yard today and found an almost perfect chrome replacement so I'm going to stick with that but thanks for the ideas guys!
