  • Headlight wiring

Hey guys need some advice. So my 80 standards headlights are killing me. They will not switch from high to low. Cleaned out the handlebar switch, looked fine. When I opened up the headlights I found that the PO had put in a wire to give it juice when the key is turned, without having to start it to the stock yellow wire which is the high beam I believe. I tried to re connect the set up without the added wire and bring it back to original, but no lights at all so then I bypassed the RLU. Still nothing. Any thoughts on where to start looking? Also would it be easier to just scrap the original square and go to a specials round? I prefer the look of the round so I am considering trying to just do that.

i just swapped my 78E rect guages back to original Special rounds on my 81S so i had the REL back and a fuel lite (that i hate). ur may do the opposite but if u do the connectors dont match for the REL , fuel lite wont work but the guage connectors for tach and guage lites are ok. youll also have an 85mph speedo which is why i put the 78s on the 81 initally. headlight i havent had to mess with. sorry

I had the same problem.. I fixed an issue with the connector, replaced the bulb and the fuse.... all problems solved.
The relay may be causing you problems as well, lift the tank a bit to access it ( its gold in color if its OEM ). Test voltage at the connector relay disconnected, test the red/yellow to black,no voltage = fuse. While the bike is running test black to gray... I think, no voltage = diode. The blue/black is the power out line to your headlight and gages. If you suspect that the relay is bad connect it and test the blue/black to black, from the back of the connector.... sorry if I am confusing you
