  • black box, new or rebuilt

I have a guy at work that is a r/c model plane enthusiast. He also spent the last 20 years designing and installing assembly line robotics, and sat tv systems. he says that there might be a modern made alternative to recycling the cdi units. Does anyone have or know of a schematic with componet values of the boxes? he is sugggesting a unit from a mulit-engined r/c plane that can be adapted for bike use. Who Knows, it could work.

Schematic for the black box has come up before...so far with no luck finding one or reverse-engineering it. Apparently Yamaha used some proprietary parts in the box and they never released tech info or specs.

Keep in mind that the XS/XJ used at least 3 versions of the box; the original, '81, and '82. The last 2 have the ignition curve (ignition advance) built into the box since they don't use a mechanical advance like earlier models.

Seems to me there was some discussion about an Accel unit that would plug into the early XS wiring harness and work OK. Anyone remember this thread? Might have been on the old Yahoo group.....

Just a thought...what about adapting the individual coil system used on some GM products? My Saturn 4-banger uses this set-up; seems to work well but I have never looked into the triggering mechanism. After all, the late-model xs/xj electronic pickups send out pulses.....

check out http://www.bgsoflex.com/megasquirt.html there is a sister project called megasquirt and spark that might be able to be modified to replace the cdi. Hang out on the mailing list - there are guys there that can make a replacement happen. You'd be surprised at what they are doing with megasquirt.

PS - I've got megasquirt running (fuel only, for now). Check out http://bilbo.gotdns.org for pictures and a couple of videos, if you want to hear it running on fuel injection.

**Editted your Megasquirt link so it would work! T.C.

        There may be an alternative

Heard of a guy here in the UK who ued an aftermarket box from a "contemporary" Jap 4 - something like an early GSX1100 or GPz1100.

He used the box but needed to do a little machining to get the trigger mechanism to fit in place of the vac advance unit. said that the bike ran fine - even tho' I suppose any mapping of the engine would have been based on another bike entirely.

Any one else tried this approach?
