Carb and Model Question

I have a 1979 F (2H7-020367) frame with a 1980 SG (3J6-005410) motor.
The bike has a sidecar and full touring package. Can anyone tell me what year bike the touring pack is from. They are factory Yamaha side bags with, I believe, a Windjammer fairing. Also, what would be the best carb combination for good gas mileage (touring). I have both 1979 and 1980 carbs (plus others). I would like ideas on jet and float settings, etc.

Really, all the touring stuff could be from any year. No real way to know that I am aware of.

As to carb selection, I prefer the later model carbs as they seem easier to tune for me. What you really want to pay attention to is if you have an aftermarket exhaust, or POD filters, etc... you tune the carbs to the engine and its components, not really to the bike setup. Either set of carbs will deliver the same power really.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that it has a new Jardine 4 into 2 exhaust with a stock air box.

I would think you will be fine with stock jetting, needle height for earlier carbs, and float height on either set of carbs. You have basically a stock set up. If it were me, I'd use 120 mains, 42.5 pilots, 185 pilot air, and set the floats at 23 MM +/- .5 mm on the 80 carbs. That should get you running good.

Gas mileage is pretty much a wash on these bikes. You'll get anywhere from 30-44mpg if well-tuned, but the sidecar will likely drag that down a bit. I get 42-44mpg with my dynojet kit (basically stock jetting) and a full touring setup, as long as I am going long distances at the speed limit. Since you have the stock airbox and a 4-2 exhaust, I'd say to stay at the stock jetting and see how that works for you as far as performance goes. Usually, switching to pod filters or a 4-1 exhaust is what warrants a change in jetting (not always though).

I'm sure you could get a fairing and soem bags put on probably as dealer options on any of the years, but I belive only the 81H model "Venturer" offered from the factory as a fully dressed dedicated tourer, and it was the only way the H was offered.

They did, but only as an 'accessory' which is why you won't find much reference to it in the original advertising. IIRC, they even sold it in bits; you could get just the fairing, the bags, or a trunk, but they did offer these in a 'combo' with a slightly cheaper total price if you bought it all at once. There was even a 'touring seat' for the '78-79 bikes offered, but that's a rare piece as it had to be bought separately. You could order a new bike with the tour pack already installed, in that case the bike was shipped (sans tour pack) to a 'assembly point' where the bits were installed, then on to the dealer. But many were installed by the dealers (some wouldn't allow owner installs) either before going on the showroom floor, or if a buyer ordered one.
