  • Lost 5th gear

    I lost 5th gear on a ride a few weeks ago and now she is making a howling nosie and I still dont have 5th. Any clues on a fix? Thank you in advance for your help

    When you say you LOST 5th do you mean it won't STAY in 5th or it won't GO into 5th?

      It doesnt go in to 5th

        You will want to open up the shift fork cover on the left side. Look at the shift drum and check that all the pins are in it (the ones the shift pawl grabs to rotate the drum). This is a pretty typical sign of one of them falling out.

          Here's a picture of what Don is talking about. The arrows are pionting to the pins...



          You see the star plate there that holds the pins in place? The tabs can break off and allow the pins to fall out.

          If you pull the left rear engine cover and discover that is the issue, drop the oil pan and you'll probably find the missing pin laying in there.

            That was the problem. the tab moved and the pin was laying in the pan. Thanks now I have 5th back and stopped some of the leaks. Thank you very much
