  • Reed Switch in Speedometer

Does any one know if the reed switch in the speedometer can be replaced? My auto canceler stopped working. After checking I found the glass around the reed switch was broken. Now I know why it does not work .

Thanks in advance for your help with this.

    Hi Ozz,
yes, the reed switch can be pried out and when another one is put in it will work to trip the canceller.
They are kinda delicate so be gentle with it.
You'll have to salvage the replacement from another speedo, gawd knows where you can find a new one.

Dont want to have to buy a speedo just for the reed switch.

Do you think a reed switch can be found at a electronics shop? Doing a little googling I found some. Problem is there is a lot of them and trying to find the correct one seems to be a little difficult.

I'm guessing if we can figure out the specs it's just a matter of finding one with the same specs, and someplace like digikey would have them in stock with fast shipping I'm sure. I hesitate to pull mine apart to try and figure that out though, but reed switches are pretty standard electronic parts, and it should be easy to find a unit that will replace it, it's primarily the size and, magnetic sensitivity and contact current rating IIRC that matters on them, with the first two being the major thing as they are almost always used for low current low voltage switching circuits. It's likely the just about any reed switch that is the same size may work, but please don't quote me on that.

          Hi Ozz,
me neither! Has to be a list member who has a dead speedo with a working reed switch in it who'd pry it out and sell it to you cheap?

I think I've got one out in the garage Ozz. If your wife is tickled about sending a patch to NZ, how will she feel about bike parts from NZ ?

Don't get too exited yet though, I'll need to check the parts box as to whats left after the rebuild following my 'off'.

I'm gonna try the local electronics place this weekend. If that does not work I will let you know.

              Thanks

Well there are a lot of different reed switches. I think I have it figured out on which one will work. If some one here can give me the measurement of the glass tube, in mm, that would be great.

                Thanks all,

                Ozz

Well I could not find one with the same measurements at the local electronics shop.

                        I did find a Philmore one part # 30-17152.

                        Installed and tested. Works great.
