  • emblem painting rookie needs help?

I sprayed black semigloss spraypaint at 60 degrees and it looks like crap. anyway too late , Ive wetsanded 300-400 but their is still a mess(in the small crevaces there is very rough) can i use a chemical to remove the gunked paint off the plastic? Im doing the new emblems black ssemigloss spraypaint then chrome model paint(enamel), then the painter is going to clearcoat them, thanks in advance brian

Be very careful about using any harsh chemcals to remove the paint. I got a bit careless a few years back with some really good paing stripper and it melted my emblems. You might be better using some dental picks adn toothpicks with just enough solvent to soften a small section at a time.

Have you checked out the refinishing article I posted a while ago, or a slightly less tedious way that Ken Bowd came up with?

      paint removal

Hello all. when i was building plastic model cars. we would use formula 409 to strip the paint off the plastic.have also used brake fluid and easy off oven cleaner. would soak painted parts in 409 overnite. then use tooth brush to scrub off paint. brake fluid and oven cleaner would wait for paint to bubble and peel then use tooth brush to scrub off paint.never ruined any models. not sure if tank emblems are made off same material. so be careful if you try these technics.
when you want something bad enough, don't let anything stand in your way, and don't take "no" for an answer. EVER

        Tank Emblems

Brian, why not just replace them? Seems like a lot of hassle for a few bucks worth of new parts. I have seen a post here concering them, and Yamaha offers brand new ones for golf carts that identical to our, only they come in chrome. They are very cheap, only $3-$5. The part number is posted in the threads also. I plan on buying some for Twilite Special, as it is black and silver also.

ok guys I used paint thinner, toothbrush and a needle for small crevaces in the cursive areas in the sidecover emblem. I soaked an old tank emblem in paint thinner overnight and it did not melt and the paint came off easy . im going with chrome letters instead of gold. matches chrome on the engine, and guys dont make the mistake of only ordering 2 (golfcart emblems @$. 2.83 )like i didlike i did make it 4.
