  • Another coil Question

Does anybody know if the XS coils will work on the XJ. Our cycle salvage here has lots of XS's but no XJ's at all.

The XJ needs 3 ohm coils and I think only the 81 had those, but if you took the ballast resistor from the earlier models as well you would be fine.

Correct Nate, only the 81 models of the XS got the 3 ohm coils stock. All others had 1.5 ohm coils with 1.5 ohm ballast resistor.

Another option is of course new coils, or if your looking to stay under that price tag, the Honda VF1000 coils are pretty much a direct swap. And with the added advantage of being able to replace plug wires whenever you feel like it with no cutting or epoxy required.

        Hi Lance,
that's the stock two plug wire coil from a 1980 or later XS650? I swear it's the same effin' coil, give or take the ballast resistor. Check that the coil's built in plug wires are long enough before you buy and at the appallingly high prices that the Regina bike breaker wants for their parts you should think about new aftermarket instead of 30 year old used?
