I believe it's parts 9-19 that TC is talking about, aproximatly, that may be different on the 81. Those would be the parts that would need to be installed in order for the rest of the kick start assembly to work and should fit right in there with some additional labor.

However, having been into these gears myself I must say that it may not be worth the effort unless you have some experience there. They can be a real bitch to get in.

The kickstart is good peace of mind but I personally have only used mine once in an emergency.

Are you having some trouble with the gears? Sorry if I missed something.

I've searched around a little bit and I haven't been able to find any gears for sale anywhere. i was all gung ho about getting this thing running and then I got married so I didn't do anything but look at the bike for a few months. I went to a place looking for parts on Saturday and I was actually talking the guy that had cleaned the carbs and done some stuff to it for the guy i bought it from. He said that 2nd and 3rd was out on my bike when he cleaned the carbs a few years ago. I have a laundry list of things I have to to get it. I'm just curious if I will need to replace the shift forks too since the guy rode it for years without 2nd gear. So after all that. Where can I buy the "better" gears and shift forks. Side no the guy said it was running like a champ when he worked on. Any info would be helpful. Also Any body in the North FL area done this that wants to gimme a hand?

        Hey Scooby,

        http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Ya...ION/parts.html

They run about $130 per gear, so to fix 2nd and 3rd will probably run you close to $600 in gears. For alot of us, that ends up being 4 times our budget for the bike, and that is why the Dremel fix is so popular.

Ohhh. and I hope you got your carbs fixed up, I am still toying with that set we were talking about last fall.

After 20 years of marriage, I can still recall what the financial impact of that one day is like. And it is only getting started to!

I'd do the dremel fix on those gears you have. Its almost free, especially compared to the cost of new gears.

I would have to pull one apart scooby but I'm certain I have a good secondary shaft, gears and forks if ya need 'em in one of these engines.

                    Hey Scooby,

You may not have to replace the forks, depending on whether the PO learned and used the bad habit of holding the shift lever UP to keep it engaged in 2nd and 3rd or not? It's the holding the lever against the spinning gear that causes the forks to get worn. IF he just shifted it, and then hammered the engine hard, then the gears took the brunt of the wear, and the forks may be okay! Many of us have done the Dremmel fix, and the bikes have been just fine for many years afterwards. It's highly suggested that you work on essentially ALL the gears dogs/slots since you decribed 2nd and 3rd being faulty, 1st isn't far behind, so while you're in there, undercut them all.

Now swapping the Washer is another choice, some say to do it with the Dremmel fix, others have stated that the Washer swap would have been good to do Prior to having any symptoms or wear, but once the wear has caused skipping/jumping out of gear, that the Dremmel process is really all that's needed, actually getting the dogs/slots undercut pulls them together and keeps them engaged under load. The washer helped to keep them engaged when they were OEM square cut...along with providing a little more engagement/contact area between the dogs/slots.

Replace your clutch springs while you're in there, they get sprung quickly with just a few years age, and can help ward off slippage in the future.

I was able to buy the set of gears for about $200. I can't remember where I bought them as it was some time ago. I suppose it's possible the price has gone up that much. I find the best prices at YAMAHA SPORTS CENTER.

At the prices listed in a previous post, I would have given much more serious consideration to the "Dremel Fix".

I think he was just 'double tapping" it but the rubber around the shifter is ate up so who knows.
