  • oil in exaust header at motor

hello gents just bought a 1979 xs 1100 special with 10,000 original miles bike ran I did ride it so I kinow it runs, I had a little bit of an ehaust leak at #2 cylinder noticed one of the exaust nuts were gone ,and there is burned oil residue around the ehaust around on the head.

pulled ehaust off and have found quite alot of oil in exaust port its self , the bike sat for a 7+ years I am wondering if valve seals may be dryed out ?

any thoughts and advise . thanks

    Well,

Hopefully it hasn't been run too long that way, otherwise it could cause that cylinder to run lean, get extra hot? Can you do a compression test to verify that the valves are still sealing okay, and all rings are good, values within specs...within 10% of each cylinder, stock is 142 at sea level, but with it not run in a while, could also be stuck rings allowing oil blow by, and may just need some running time/miles to re-break in.

Might suggest putting some Marvel Mystery Oil in the engine oil, a few ounces, then start and run the engine GENTLY to operating temps...have FAN blowing across engine/exhaust headers, have on center stand, run thru the gears with very little throttle, no hard revs, do NOT RIDE IT, etc., just get the MMO circulating to help clean out the varnish, unstick the piston rings, the clutch plates, etc., and then drain oil/change filter, and then IF your compression readings are close to each other, and you've checked the valve clearances and are within spec, put new Exhaust gaskets in, and RIDE IT to break it in, watching for oil smoke, etc.!

Only if you have very lopsided comp readings, or no compression on #2, etc, would you then possibly need to take the head off to fix any valves and the seals at that time.

If the oil is on the OUTSIDE of the exhaust I would be looking for an external leak. There are drain holes in each of the spark plug wells that dump right near the exhaust. A leaky valve cover gasket would allow oil to run down into the spark plug wells and drain on the front of the head and exhaust.

If the valve seals are bad you will notice smoke from the exhaust, particularly when you first start the engine.
