  • Help! ran out of Idle adjustment.

Just put the carbs back on after a thorough cleaning. Got em all synced up ok, but while I was bringing #4 to #3 the Idle would go 3K. I'd adjust the idle back down to 1100 and continue #4 to #3 again the Idle would take off. I finally got #4 to match #3 then on to bringing #'s 1&2 to #3. The Idle took off again. I stopped with #'s 1&2 about 2" of merc higher than #'s 3&4.

    Here's my Problem.

It's idleing at 1800rpm and I have no more adjustment. There is still adjustment left for Idle screw to come down, but the throttle connector will not lower to meet it. I loosened the cable adjustment on the handle bar to make sure it wasn't the cable tension preventing it. I also checked for obstruction at the cable/throttle pivot connection.

When I come to a stop the Idle goes to about 2000 then settles at 1800. If I roll the throttle it will go down to 1100 or 1200 for a moment then creeps up to about 1800.

#2 &#3 Idle mix screws are stuck, stuck, stuck, but their corresponding plugs look normal and I've never messed with them in the past. #1 & #4 plugs had a little carbon indicating slightly rich mix but not anything abnormal.

I don't have a color tune and currently can't afford one.

    Any Ideas?

First off, until you synch the carbs up, the bike will continue to idle up like that. I would try disconnecting the throttle cable from the grip end or the carb end. So it no longer stops the throttle plates from seating against the idle screw. Finsish synching the carbs. Then reattach the throttle cable and see what it gets you.
Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.

Check for a vacuum leak someplace between the carb and head. Cracked boots? Loose bolts? Clamps not tight?

        jat,
if ur using vacuum guages, did u calibrate them before
        doing the sync?

having stuck mixture screws isnt going to make tuning
very easy, would be worth while attempting to free them up.

An important piece of info that you didn't provide is what bike you are working on. You should add it to your SIGNATURE so that it'll be posted with every reply/post you submit, so we won't have to review your PROFILE to find that you have an 82XJ.

The Plot thickens. Have you read that you first need to block off the YICS circuit in the head before you can attempt to synch the carbs?? There's a tool you can make yourself...see tech tips...or you can get the YICS eliminator device...found in the Parts for Sale...sticky thread of products from MEMBERS and such.

Next, you'll need to get the PILOT SCREWS loosened so that you can adjust them...and IF you didn't remove them, then you weren't really able to do a thorough cleaning of the carbs and ensure that the Pilot jet ports and passages are truly clear and clean!

Being able to turn the Pilot screws down/clockwise to cut down the fuel/air flow would also help to lower the rpm. Not trying to bust your chops, just that it's difficult to do certain procedures properly with stuck parts.

Part of syncing the carbs is setting the idle mixture, so you MUST fix those mixture screws before you can continue, you either have a rich of lean mixture on one or more carb. Either that, or you have something blocking the throttle from going down further, make sure nothing is in the way of the end of the throttle cable where it connects to the carbs from moving further, sometimes the carb boot clamps can get in the way the block it and cause what your seeing. However, you DO need to be able to adjust the idle mixture, because with the changing fuel the place the screws need to be to get the right fuel mixture has moved, so you MUST be able to move them to adjust to the changes in the fuels in the last couple of decades.

Yes, I made a YICS tool several years ago. The carbs were synced.
I'll try loosening the Idle mix screws. They've just never been an issue until this spring.
                Thanks guys.

I'm using a mercury carb stick. and a YICS tool.
So I tried getting the Pilot Screws out of 2 & 3 but they are so stuck it just completely trashed the tops. I tried soaking them in WD-40 & Break Free, I also tried heat, now I guess I'll have to drill and ezy-out them. Anyone ever done this before? (dumb question, huh?)
                    Advise before I start?
