No apologies necessary Brian, I am not a fan of that sort of thing either. You have to admit Jeremy did a nice job on that little SG though. Butchered,eh, maybe a little, but far from hidious.
The Limey bike is a standard James, or maybe I just misunderstood your statement.
It was created by Bob Jones. Jeremy bought it from Bob's wife Karla at the last Bob Jones memorial rally.
Now, the bike in the pic above this post, THAT is freakin ugly.

Oh... yes, I know it's a standard (as opposed to bobber) but what I meant was the paint job etc. Or did it come like that as standard in the US? If so, it's pretty daring! IMO it looks really nice! Not everyone's cup of tea, I'm sure but nice indeed...
XS1100F 1980 European model. Standard. Dyna coils. Iridium plugs. XS750 final drive (sometimes). Micron fork brace. Progressive front springs. Geezer regulator/rectifier. Stainless 4 into 2 exhaust. Auto CCT (Venturer 1300) SOLD. New project now on the go. 1980 European model.
Could someone please tell me what exactly a 'bobber' is. I've seen it mentioned a few times. Could someone define what one is? Maybe a few points it has to have in order to be one? Or things it shouldn't have?
A bobber is a bike where all of the "unnecessary" parts get pull off, such as fenders, signals, and sometimes even gages. The usually get lowered and flat-blacked, and get straight bars put on, and end up all looking the same, but there are some pretty rad ones out there.
Bob Jones was (he passed away a few years back) a very popular XS11 specialist here in the USA, perhaps he was not as well known across the big pond. To be honest, I had never heard of him until I joined this site. He wrote the book XS11 Heaven.
Anyway, the "Limey Accent" bike was a typical stock Standard XS11 that Bob Jones customized as you see it in those pics.

Yes, I've heard of the book and would like to get hold of a copy. I know who you mean now. I like that Limey bike (possibly because I am a Limey). It's one of the coolest customised ones I've seen.

a Bobber has parts bobbed. That is, cut short. Bobtailed cat (or bobbed tail)? a "cut" tail. Horse tail cut short = bobbed tail.
An excerpt of the words etymology (for cutting short definition):
"The hair sense was revived with a shift in women's styles early 20c. (verb 1918, noun 1926). Related words include bobby pin, bobby socks, bobsled."
verb, transitive:
To cut short or reshape: bobbed her hair; had his nose bobbed.
Another example of the word bobber defined:
bobber - A person who rides a bobsled or bobsleigh (meaning "short sled").
So removing parts and decreasing overall apparent length (or actual length) with the effect of reducing weight as well.
Well that was fun to explore. I love word origins.

I like the bike above...would I make one? no, but i do like it...and I have to agree with whoever said they all look the same...they all are very similar in looks and often only have a paint job that differs in most cases...then again I have an appreciation to all bikes...

Ditto. That's a very good etymological explanation and definitely explains what I had, until now, thought was a nonsense word.......
By the WAY, I read somewhere that OK comes from the native American 'Okhe', meaning 'yes' or signifying agreement. Correct?

James,
That has been discredited as a correct suggestion for the word origin.
Along with others:
It comes from any one of a number of languages, most often the Choctaw word okeh.
From the Greek olla kalla, meaning all right or satisfactory.
From the Scots och, aye.
From the Finnish oikea.
From Ewe, a West African language.
and many more incorrect suggestions.
The correct origin goes something like this:
"(Allen Walker) Read solved the mystery in a series of articles in American Speech in 1963-64. The term began as a facetious misspelling for all correct (oll korrect) in Boston newspapers in the spring of 1839. OK was the result of two editorial fads common in newspapers of the era.
One of these fads was the use playful abbreviations. Beginning in 1838, Boston papers began using a variety of abbreviations. These include:
O.F.M. = Our First Men
G.T.D.H.D = Give The Devil His Due
N.G. = No Go
S.P. = Small Potatoes
The second fad was to adopt the voice of an uneducated bumpkin, representing this by deliberately misspelling words. Frequently these two fads were combined and the following misspelled abbreviations appeared in papers in 1838:
O.W. = Oll Wright (all right)
K.G. = Know Go (no go)
K.Y. = Know Yuse (no use)
K.K.N. = Kommit Know Nuisance (commit no nuisance)
It was in this tradition that the first recorded use of OK appeared on 23 March 1839 by the Boston Morning Post:
He of the Journal...would have the “contribution box,” et ceteras, o.k.—all correct—and cause the corks to fly, like sparks, upward."
(Sources: Allen Walker Read’s American Speech articles; Oxford English Dictionary, 2nd Edition)
Weeeee! Uh oh. I better make a bike reference soon.
The bobber look doesnt appeal to me. That is, I cant see myself on it. It looks fine for others, but my personal style is somewhere between "Not a Harley" and "Not a CroCket".
